Vanity, I guess: Is it "wrong" for an American citizen to exercise their 1st Amendment freedom, and refuse to partake of Christianity?

Posted on 10/04/2020 6:43:19 AM PDT by Terry L Smith

Dear Readers,

I post this question: "Is it "wrong" for an American citizen to exercise their 1st Amendment freedom, and refuse to partake of Christianity?"

Why would it be 'wrong" for them?

What makes it 'wrong'?

How would you address that, without stepping on their 1st Amendment right?

Do you see the 1st Amendment as a stumbling block for Christianity?

Do you think American citizens who make this choice should have 1st Amendment rights?

If not, why?

Thank you for reading these questions, even if you just shake your head, and move on.

What causes a person to wonder about such things?

The first amendment prohibits the Nation from establishing an official religion.

I am not sure what that has to do with any of the questions you raise. Last time I looked, no one was looking to establish an official religion in this country. No one was even talking about it.

There is a ton of ignorance these days in basic civics.

So sleep late on Sunday, no one would care.

Now, how about the opposite?

Outright discrimination and the dehumanizing of Christians?

I don’t think it’s complicated. It is their right. I personally believe that it is also morally wrong, others may differ. We have the right to do plenty of things that are morally wrong. What is puzzling to you about this?

You can believe or not believe anything you want.

Now now let me turn it around. Is it okay, under the 1st Amendment, for people to plead with you to consider becoming Christian? Or should Evangelism be banned?

Not everything that is morally wrong to do should be illegal. For example, it might be morally wrong for Fred to make fun of Joe. But it is also morally wrong for me to gag Fred so he can't make fun of Joe. Its a fallacy to see government as though it could or should have the power to stop all moral wrongs. When governments go to far in that direction it causes more harm than good.

In the case of Christianity and the founders, they thought it wrong not to worship God at all. But they also thought it wrong to try to make people worship God--and completely futile since such worship is not really worship at all. They considered it a God given right not to be forced to worship God by other men or by governments. The issue was between the individual and God.

What business of yours is it what someone believes??

This is America, Sunshine, where our founding fathers knew that people need to keep out of each other’s business.

If you can’t do that, then you’re a liberal and an enemy of America and her freedoms and liberties.

The 1st Amendment is not a stumbling block for Christianity at all. It is an important protection for Christianity and will become more important as our country as a whole becomes less Christian.

“Who’s paying for this troll poll?”

That was my thought, too. The thread was written at an illiterate liberal level.

The Constitution also allows one to be incoherent, as Terry Smith demonstrates in this posting.

"There is a ton of ignorance these days in basic civics."

Right, it's an astonishing question for someone raised in this country, presumably receiving basic education in American values, including the First Amendment.

But maybe the author's key word is "wrong" and he means it in a biblical sense -- will biblical values condemn him if he exercises his American political rights?
The answer then involves the 1st Amendment's second part:

The author's conscience should tell him which religion (if any) feels "right" to exercise and which others (if any) feel wrong.
The US Constitution specifically stays away from those matters.

This person really needs to find something to do. They seem to have way too much free time on their hands.

There is nothing wrong whatsoever with an American wanting to follow or not follow any particular religion or none at all.

Everyone, regardless even of the existence of our nation has the fundamental right to hold whatever religious beliefs they want to. That's a natural right. For many of us that is a natural right granted, if you will, by God.

Our great founders simply recognized that fact and included protection for it in our constitution.

All the rest of your questions can be answered by that concept.
