Incorrect. In the East married men could be ordained, but ordained priest could not marry. This is still the rule today for both Eastern Catholics and the Orthodox. In both the office of bishop is reserved for celibates. In the West celibacy/sexual constancy for priests was the rule since the earliest years. The story that it was imposed in the West in the Middle Ages is pure myth.
Perhaps you are right. Nevertheless, there WERE married priests. And there is also an economic argument for celibacy. Its not all spiritual.
