I’m not impressed with Australia’s system of non-public trials. What was the evidence against the guy? I just don’t know what to make of this one, as the nature of the evidence against him hasn’t been publicly disclosed. It’s not like a McCarrick situation where everyone and his brother apparently knew about the man’s antics and essentially no one is defending him. Many Australian Catholics who know Pell well, on the other hand, say that the accusations are bogus. Let’s face it. Because of the crimes of their brother priests, essentially all accused are guilty until proven innocent in the minds of some members of the public.

If the churches would really try to deal with these problems quickly when they arise, there would be far far less need for secular government interference or involvement. Which while sometimes necessary or at least understandable - csn do a church great harm imho.
