Your assertions while theologically irrelevant are also completely ahistorical.
By 1519, Tetzel had already fallen into disrepute and died, beggared. The papal Nuncio, Karl von Millitz proclaimed Tetzel to be a wicked sinner. Tetzel was not only preaching heresy by proclaiming the sale of indulgences, he was abetting the crime of embezzlement AGAINST ROME.
Albrecht, the Archbishop of Mainz owed a tremendous personal debt to the Vatican. Receiving payment for such debt did allow the construction of St. Peter’s (although it did much more to fund the war against the Turks). But the point was that Albrecht was only paying money he already owed. Tetzel collected money FALSELY CLAIMING it was for St. Peter’s, but in reality IT WAS TO RETIRED ALBRECHT’s DEBT.
You should note by my byline, I don’t blanche at accusing bishops of great evil. I just like to be historical as to which crimes to accuse them of. (St. Athanasius was actually accusing them of failing to reprove their congregations of sins.)
But the point was that Albrecht was only paying money he already owed. Tetzel collected money FALSELY CLAIMING it was for St. Peters, but in reality IT WAS TO RETIRED ALBRECHTs DEBT.
It was both.
The pope knew and gladly received the money.
He did not return, nor refuse it.
We havent even discussed theology yet.
We are discussing Romes lust for power, money, and sex.
