This was a point made my pastor during his sermon earlier today, when he was going through Jeremiah 37-40 and emphasizing the point that even though the Jewish nation had a covenantal bond with God, it wasn't because of any inherent goodness or worth on their part. Rather, it was to magnify the glory of God. Just like we're not saved because of anything we've done.

They were just as subject to judgement as Babylonians and Egyptians, and God enacted it when his law was rejected.
