Actually, I think it is an interesting historical note, that at the time they *might* have had some means of making seven different measures of the heat of a furnace. This would have been very important depending on the purpose of the furnace, say melting metal, turning sand into glass (”through a glass, darkly”, as they could only produce tinted, semi-transparent glass at the time), or hardening or glazing brick or pottery.
