Its failure, and the humiliating public debacle that ensued, damaged U.S. prestige worldwide. Who remembers that Ronald Reagan was classy enough to ask Jimmy Carter to go to Germany and greet the hostages arriving from Iran on his behalf? He also gave him credit for getting them freed, even though we all knew Reagan deserved to rightfully claim the credit. Such was the class of that man!
