England abandoned God a long time ago. Around 1900 and earlier many Church of England clerics were nominal Christians if at all. Taking orders was simply a vocation, similar to studying law. In titled families the eldest male carried on the estate while younger males had an officer’s commision in the military purchased for them or else entered the clergy. Social standing, not faith, commanded the higher, better paying offices while commoners might qualify for the lower ones (curate).
