Pope Francis Falls Behind the Episcopalians
American Spectator ^ | February 7, 2018 | R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr.

I have never met the Pope, but I have followed his activities sedulously, as might be expected of a Roman Catholic. Pope Francis is an agent for change in his 2,000-year-old church, change in what Catholics believe and change in how they worship. Notwithstanding my never having met him, my guess is that he was a bit embarrassed by a decision announced recently by the Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. The Episcopalians got the jump on him in the realm of change.

Pope Francis is not a puppet, although there may be shadowy figures behind the scenes with whom he is in cahoots. It is a mistake to think Frankie is merely a dupe who is unaware or uninterested in the damage his actions are doing to the Church. Having followed him closely for the nearly five years since since he became Pope, I find it impossible to believe that Pope Francis believes in anything remotely resembling orthodox Christianity, never mind Catholicism. Neither is he merely indifferent to Catholicism. Rather, beneath a cultivated surface of goofy goodwill, brims hostility towards those who dare to protect the Catholic faith from his degradation of it. His interests are secular and political and his outlook is anti-western. If one were looking for a CEO of an organization that has its mission to endure in this world, while pointing its member towards eternity, it would be difficult to come up with a worse candidate. Pope Francis simply isn't interested in the, well, brand of Catholicism, and he he doesn't make any effort to convince people he believes in its message, which is that Jesus Christ suffered, died, and rose from the dead so that those who believe in Him may have eternal life. What Pope Francis does believe in are climate change and open borders, all over the world. Fine platform if you're running for office, rather less so if you are running the Catholic Church.

The cathedral is the seat of both the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Michael Bruce Curry, and the Bishop of the Diocese of Washington, Mariann Edgar Budde. Wow.

I always believed it was a RC cathedral...

The worldwide Orthodox Church sometimes referred to as Eastern Catholic, the Byzantium Church, has never changed its Divine Liturgy, meaning its central tenets and teachings.

For sure, the Orthodox have their own problems on a personal level and on a level of politics in the Church. But when it comes to Service, Mass, Vespers, Observances, it’s hands-off, no one touches it.

An analogy would be the old Boy Scouts of America. The core codes of conduct, the handbooks, the process is never changed. Look what happened to the BSA when they allowed homosexual (pedo) Scoutmasters, the BSA fragmented into other scouting organizations. Same process is happening in Churches today.

Excellent comment, I love it!

Thanks. Wish I didn’t have the material. Alas, Pope Francis provides Catholics with much fodder for criticism.

Nat Cat belongs to the Episcopals, St Matthew’s is the Catholic Cathedral.
