The following is an excerpt from the "Centennial (of Declaration of Independence) Thanksgiving Sermon" (1886) by a Black Ohio State Legislator and A.M.E. Bishop Benjamin W. Arnett on "The Greatness of America" - Note that this Sermon is delivered only a few years after the end of the Civil War by this outstanding scholar/legislator/Bishop.

"Let us see what it is that makes us so great; wherein lies our strength. What has made us one of the greatest powers of the earth, politically and intellectually? Have we come to the conclusion that it is Righteousness that exalteth a nation? We have met to-day at the request of the President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, and also the Governor of our beloved State, Rutherford B. Hayes. For what? Why call us from our homes? Why come to the house of God? Why not go to the hall of mirth and to the places of amusement to-day? No that is not what they want us to do. We are commanded to go to our 'several places of worship, and there offer up thanks to Kind Providence which has brought our nation through the scenes of another year, and blessed the land with peace, plenty and prosperity.' Then as Americans we have reason to rejoice and congratulate ourselves on the greatness of our beloved country; at this the close of the first hundred years of experimental government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Ditto for my birth church but it is only a part of the problem. The popular culture, from the media to music to cinema have all become very negative towards religion. A top cinema star of today, like Bing Cosby then, would never play a clean & kind Roman Catholic Priest.

Add to that the negatives from academia, even formerly religious-based schools. Southern Methodist U to U of Notre Dame are hardly even defending, let alone propagating any faith other than a host of antis. Next comes the near crescendo of legal problems (many self-inflicted) and judicial attacks and it almost seems a miracle that anybody stays religious!

Faith and church have always been a significant part of my life. I can’t imagine my life without them. So when I read about this trend, I am reminded of this song by Keith Green:

I think people are leaving the churches for the same reason they are leaving the NFL behind. The pulpit has become a social/political forum. The church was the last refuge for most of us, but we looked up one day to discover a queer in the pew next to us, wanting to share a living hug. (I left that church!) Nou you have a Pope more worried about global warming and same sex marriage than Christianity and family values. If I wanted to be lectured on this liberal crap, I’d just turn in the tv...I don’t need it from my church every Sunday morning. I turn off the tv, the NFL...and “church.” My faith has not slipped and I feel better about MY world.
