Bestselling author Dan Brown, whose book "The Da Vinci Code" made him an international star as well as a target of religious groups for the book's portrayal of Christianity, says the world would be okay without religion, in an interview with Tony Dokoupil for CBS' "Sunday Morning," to be broadcast October 1.
"The Da Vinci Code" is one of the bestselling novels of all time, and has spawned a movie franchise. His latest book, "Origin," like his others, weaves codes, religion, science and history, while putting God on the edge of extinction.
Despite the controversy his works stir up, Brown says he's "absolutely not" anti-Catholic, adding that religion does a lot of good.
"Traditionally, all the gods fall. And my question is, are we naïve to believe that the gods of today will not suffer the same fate," Brown says.
"Would that lead to a better planet?" Dokoupil asks Brown.
"I personally believe that our planet would be absolutely fine without religion, and I also feel we are evolving in that direction," Brown says.
Brown opens up to Dokoupil about his writing; the influence his parents had on his work; and the criticism he's faced from fellow blockbuster author Stephen King, who called Brown's writing the intellectual equivalent of "mac and cheese."
"I like mac and cheese," Brown tells Dokoupil. "We would all like to say, we, 'Eh, I don't read my reviews. I don't mind getting a bad review. It doesn't hurt.' I think that's a lie. I'm trying to write books that taste like ice cream but have the nutrition of vegetables. I'm not trying to emulate William Faulkner. I never said I was."

Says the guy who has made millions fictionalizing a religion.
Liberals are without religion or any faith at all (outside of believe stupid crap), so I’ll just stick with the religious crowd that believes there is more to life than man. They just tend to be happier, productive, and good all around people to know.
Doubt he was so straightforward during the years he was selling the book and the movie rights.
He’s got the money now and can be honest.

I can see where that notion would not offend me. Since my wife and I are devout non-denominational Christians. “Organized Religion’ can be a force for evil. And has been. It’s all about your personal relationship with God. You don’t need rituals and beurocracy to know God.

Te Ten Commandments were given to place laws above human tinkering. If men made laws they could do away with those laws.
If man was not created in God’s image then a human life is worth no more than that of a cow. If you can butcher a cow and eat its flesh why can’t you butcher and eat a human?
As an example, I give you any of the communist countries of the 20th century.
People were tortured, starved and worked to death on an industrial scale in the Godless Communist country of Cambodia in an effort to create the perfect Godless state. Fully one third of the country’s population was killed by the state in the infamous “Killing Fields”.
Cambodia is just the most drastic example but China, the Soviet Union and Viet Nam all killed their citizens in systematic fashions in order to bring about their Godless utopian vision.
Without God morality is a baseless standard dictated by the state and subject to the whims of the people that rule the state.
I have read that the first penitentiaries were organized by religious folks so criminals could do penance for their crimes against society.
Before that it was jail, the stocks, hangman’s noose, or banishment.
