New Orleans’ iconic golden statue tagged with “Tear it down!” graffiti. In the midst of mob-and-moment, let's think about what we're doing.
The golden equestrian statue of St. Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans, stands on Decatur Street in New Orleans’ historic French Quarter. A gift from France in 1972 to honor the city’s French heritage, the statue is the focus of an annual community parade organized by a group devoted to the 15th-century saint and military heroine.
Joan, of course, has no connection to the Confederacy or to American history. But that didn’t stop someone from spray-painting “Tear it down!” on the statue earlier this year, according to Nola.com. The graffiti has since been removed, though stains remain, but the incident raises questions.
Did someone mistake a woman in medieval armor for a Southern general? If so, it wasn’t anyone associated with New Orleans’ active Tear ‘Em Down (TED) movement, which advocates for removing monuments to the Confederacy from public places.
“Joan of Arc is not on our radar,” assured Malcolm Suber, a leader of the New Orleans TED group.
The timing of the tagging, in early May, might suggest another source of dissatisfaction with Joan of Arc. On May 2, French Nationalist Front Party leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, father of failed French presidential candidate Marin Le Pen, led a nationalist, anti-immigrant rally in Paris, with the duplicate of New Orleans’ golden St. Joan statue as the focal point.

Well, what did Joan do to stop slavery in the United States? Nothing! That alone should be enough to tear her statue down. Plus “Joan” is a obviously a white woman’s name. So I’m sure she used her “white privilege” sometime in her career.

Confederate soldiers, sailors, and Marines that fought in the Civil war were made U.S. Veterans by an act of Congress in in 1957, U.S. Public Law 85-425, Sec 410, Approved 23 May, 1958. This made all Confederate Army/ Navy/ Marine Veterans equal to U.S. Veterans. Additionally, under U.S. Public Law 810, Approved by the 17th Congress on 26 Feb 1929 the War Department was directed to erect headstones and recognize Confederate grave sites as U.S. War dead grave sites. Just for the record the last Confederate veteran died in 1958. When you remove a Confederate statue, monument or headstone, you are in fact, removing a statue, monument or head stone of a U.S. VETERAN.
18 U.S. Code § 1369 - Destruction of veterans’ memorials (a) Whoever, in a circumstance described in subsection (b), willfully injures or destroys, or attempts to injure or destroy, any structure, plaque, statue, or other monument on public property commemorating the service of any person or persons in the armed forces of the United States shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 10 years, or both. (b) A circumstance described in this subsection is that— (1) in committing the offense described in subsection (a), the defendant travels or causes another to travel in interstate or foreign commerce, or uses the mail or an instrumentality of interstate or foreign commerce; or (2) the structure, plaque, statue, or other monument described in subsection (a) is located on property owned by, or under the jurisdiction of, the Federal Government.

well, since we’re erasing history of slaveholders, let’s strip New Orleans, the slave-trading capitol of France, of everything French, including Joan. And there’s a bunch of French stuff up by the Canadian border - have at it. California missions? racist slaveholders from Mexico!! Tear all Mexican stuff down in Calfornia, Arizona, New Mexico (gotta change that name) and Texas.
