In all fairness, some Protestant churches beat the Catholic church to this particular form of lunacy by many years.
Protestant or non Catholic denominations have no pope or universal leader.
And any weirdness (of COURSE there is .... ) has been localized and scattered about, not defined as a church doctrine or dogma.
Everybody knows that, but it doesn't help to watch another denomination walk over the cliff like another lemming following the leader. Everybody is watching everybody waiting for someone else to stand up and say no. Ask a Lutheran, Episcopalian, Methodist, Anglican, ect what happened and usually they can't really put their finger on the tipping point.
