Faithful Storm Out of Mass in Italy After Priest Criticizes Pope Francis

ROME (RNS) A priest is being asked to take a break from his parish in the small Italian town of Montesilvano after some in his congregation reportedly stormed out of Mass when he openly criticized Pope Francis on Palm Sunday (April 9).

Media reports claimed the congregation shouted “Shame, shame!” at the Rev. Edward Pushparaj when he said Pope Francis had only been “bad” for the Catholic Church.

Palm Sunday commemorates the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem and is a solemn occasion on the Christian calendar that marks the start of Holy Week and the runup to Easter Sunday.

But the episode has forced the local bishop, Archbishop Tommaso Valentinetti of the Archdiocese of Pescara-Penne, to intervene; he has pledged to meet the disgruntled parishioners from St. Anthony of Padua parish.

In an article published on the archdiocesan website, Valentinetti suggested that Pushparaj, an assistant pastor at the church who is also known as Don Edward, may have overstepped the mark during his preaching.

“Preaching is one of the main activities in the ministry of a priest,” Valentinetti said. “It is a service linked to meditation on the Word of the day, the liturgy, and certainly cannot relate to personal judgments, especially when they are not in communion with the pope.”

I would have thought they would’ve ‘stormed’ the pulpit and carried the Priest on their shoulders cheering his criticism of the Red pope.

Bergoglio is the worst Pope of all time.

The bishop is a pathetic suck-up.

The priest is extremely imprudent.

Never a good idea to criticize the boss in front of the public.

Pope Francis is a liberal trying to destroy catholicism. Why would ANY Catholic like him?

Oh, some other Popes may have been as bad or even worse than him. But you have to go back CENTURIES to find a potential candidate.

This is the worst Pope, at least in our lifetimes, or for a few hundred years. There is some competition for “Worst” among the ranks of ALL the Popes.

The Wiki on this is not bad: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bad_Popes (Yeah, I don’t trust Wiki much either, but the content here is decent.)

Note: The Wiki is referring to and includes information from a book written quite a while ago. Maybe that’s why it doesn’t suck. LOL.

Read between the lines. It was Italy, there were 4 old ladies at Mass, and that’s it. No one goes to church there.

Italian men go to Church four times in their lives:

1) Baptism
2) First Holy Communion
3) Marriage
4) Their funeral

WOW. Never knew there were that many vile human beings to inhabit the seat of St. Peter. In contrast, Alexander VI seemed a piker at debauchery and seemed genuinely repentant at the end.

FWIW, Montesilvano is about halfway down the boot on the Adriatic coast, about 75 to 100 miles east from the town of Amatrice that was devastated by earthquake recently.
