It didn’t become a university until later. Before that, it was a place where they taught islam. My guess is that there were Jews and Christians doing this long before any muslims would have — especially since it didn’t come along until about 622 AD.

I read that in the 12th century, they burned over 100,000 texts at Al-Azhar University. Muslims also burned thousands and thousands of texts in other places they invaded such as in India.
