I was an atheist until i read The Lord Of The Rings
by Fredric Heidemann
December 16, 2016
I grew up in a loving, comfortable atheist household of professional scientists. My dad was a lapsed Catholic, and my mom was a lapsed Lutheran. From the time that I could think rationally on the subject, I did not believe in God. God was an imaginary being for which there was no proof. At best, God was a fantasy for half-witted people to compensate their ignorance and make themselves feel better about their own mortality. At worst, God was a perverse delusion responsible for most of the atrocities committed by the human race.
What broke the ice? What made me consider Gods existence a real possibility? The Lord of the Rings. I was a young teenager when I first read the Tolkien tomes, and it immediately captivated me.

That movie darn near put me to sleep.
Funny the only characters that have sense of humor are the orcs. Kind of a fatalistic humor of sorts.
As well as Lewis’ Space Trilogy
Out of the Silent Planet
Perelandra
That Hideous Strength
I read the whole trilogy in one binge weekend, while I was a student at Moody many decades ago. Great experience. Most memorable moment was losing Gandalf to the Balrog. It was like, wow, how do they move forward without him? It really hit me hard. That’s when you know you’re reading a great story, when you lose yourself to the alternate reality and experience it in a deep way. I’ll never be a Tolkien, but that’s what I strive for in my own writing.
Peace,
SR
Yes; better allegory IMO than Narnia. Narnia was written for children, Silent Planet for adults.
I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Sam was totally without the kind of prideful ego that was the downfall of Man. He was unselfish, considerate, steadfast, good company in dark times, loyal, and probably the bravest character in the series. To go through all they had gone through and to still have the strength and courage to take on Shelob alone to save his friend.
Who doesn’t pray to be that brave when your test comes.
The ring is symbolic for the earthly charms that seduce us. What would seduce you? Power. Wealth? Long life or immortality? What would you do to capture this charm?
I have a hard time sitting still to watch a movie or about any television show. Most are junk IMHO. But I can and have watched the LOTR series many times. It is one of the few that I feel drawn to.
I read from the Simalarion (I know I misspelled that, alright) and the Hobbit and LOTR every second year.
Excellent analysis.
Agree. Samwise is the only one not corrupted by The Ring.
“And ok, suppose you have some golden ring, you still think ill have to do what you say?”
I’m sure that’s EXACTLY what your wife thinks! (-:
What about Bombadill? (sp?)
And isn’t it great to not be talking about that guy Obama anymore?
Ents tell good jokes, but they take forever.
It’s impossible to be an atheist.
Anyone who says they are, is simply hiding the truth in the middle of their wrongness.
John McCain hates hobbits.
That's all we needed to know about McCain.
Peter Jackson forgot all about Tom Bombadil, too.
:-)
I’d rather go to (E), if the rest of the (E) fans would too.
Happy birthday, Professor. (Guiness rye pale ale).

Sorry, couldn’t wait til 9 pm.
Good point. The atheists that I have known >hate< religion and specifically >hate< Christians. They are not agnostic at all.
Unfortunately many Christians have given them the justification for their hate (in their own minds of course). Some of the so called leadership in the churches and religious organizations have done more damage than they will ever know.
