Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Book of Psalms

(Psalm 39)

Psalm 39[a]

For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

1 I said, “I will watch my ways
    and keep my tongue from sin;
I will put a muzzle on my mouth
    while in the presence of the wicked.”
2 So I remained utterly silent,
    not even saying anything good.
But my anguish increased;
3     my heart grew hot within me.
While I meditated, the fire burned;
  then I spoke with my tongue:

4 “Show me, Lord, my life’s end
    and the number of my days;
    let me know how fleeting my life is.
5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
    the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,
    even those who seem secure.[b]

6 “Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom;
    in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth
    without knowing whose it will finally be.

7 “But now, Lord, what do I look for?
    My hope is in you.
8 Save me from all my transgressions;
    do not make me the scorn of fools.
9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth,
    for you are the one who has done this.
10 Remove your scourge from me;
    I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
11 When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin,
    you consume their wealth like a moth—
    surely everyone is but a breath.

12 “Hear my prayer, Lord,
    listen to my cry for help;
    do not be deaf to my weeping.
I dwell with you as a foreigner,
    a stranger, as all my ancestors were.
13 Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again
    before I depart and am no more.”

Footnotes:

1. Psalm 39:1 In Hebrew texts 39:1-13 is numbered 39:2-14.
2. Psalm 39:5 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here and at the end of verse 11.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Without going into the complete history of crime and punishment, we can say that there was a time when the prison system was for punishment only and not rehabilitation. People accused of crimes were thrown into dungeons and sometimes never heard from again. Our Founding Fathers knew that this was wrong, and so inserted a clause forbidding "cruel and unusual punishment" in our Constitution. The still spoke of "punishment", however, not "rehabilitation". Prisons were still prisons!

During the 1820's in America, there was a movement towards making the prison system a place where convicts could reflect upon their crimes and "repent", and thus the word penitentiary was born. Like other Progressive movements that did not include True Repentance and turning to the One True God for forgiveness, this experiment in secular mercy was doomed to failure. Recidivism is a profound problem, and our prison systems are horrible, frightening places, with very little "repenting" going on.

In this Psalm, David speaks of the burden of being under God's Judgement. It is not pleasant, but it DOES lead to Repentance and Redemption. This is a "Penitential Psalm" and will be followed by Songs of Deliverance!

Stay Tuned.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Agreeing in prayer. Thanks for the history lesson. If only over the years just one person would have touched the life of an incarcerated soul and showed him or her the love of Jesus in their younger years, what would our country or world be like today. I am forever sad to read the police/sheriff reports on the radio website in our small county. . .familiar with many of the last names.

Amen!
Father God, I am so quick to post about the splinter in Jill Stein’s eye when I do not see the log in my own eye. Forgive me. Sin is sin. Father God, I lift up Jill Stein, Hillary, myself and this whole nation. May we all see the need for repentance. May we all see the need for Jesus. Father God, as a nation, may we repent of our wickedness, and seek Your wonderful beautiful awesome face.

in Christ’s name I do pray
