Isaiah was written in Hebrew in the 8th century before Jesus. The Septuagint is a Greek translation of the OT. The Septuagint dates back to the third century before Jesus. However good a translation the Septuagint was, it was just a translation.
The 3rd century BC translation was only the Five Books of Moses. The translation of the Prophets came some time later.
The Bible and the Koran, which would you think has a better chance of being something God wants us to have for our growing up in the way that we should ho as believers in Christ as The One God sent for our salvation?
Thanks for the correction.
Well then you have awfully low standards, because the "brothers of the Lord" doesn't settle the issue either way. Children from a previous marriage.
And children from a previous marriage of Joseph is not the only plausible explanation ... so what’s the point in it? ... To a Catholiciism adherent it is vital to maintain the fictions of Mary’s mediatrixship, etc. The issue is vital to Mariology, but not to salvation, so I go with what Paul clearly wrote and was first hand witness to.
Amazing.
It’s not an either or.
“I’ll quote the truth wherever I find it, thank you.”
Oh really? So if you are so cavalier about the Bible, why are you haunting these threads? I suspect you are hard pressed to actually discern truth ... the Koran is not a source of God’s Truth. The either or was precise and you cannot discern it.
Luther held it. Calvin held it. What was their excuse?
And please see the branch you are standing on as well. You need to preserve the fiction of a Church that was doctrinally corrupted and whose well-considered opinions can be ignored at will.
Would you consider the Book of Mormon to contain truth??
Incidentally, today, Sept. 23, is the anniversary of the Torah being translated into Greek. The translation was mourned with a day of fasting for many generations.
You see, Claud, I do not belong to an org, I belong to the Ekklesia which JESUS is still adding to and whose members may be found all over the planet biding their time in many orgs which work to support the org AND the members of the org, as they are convinced to do. That is why there can be such a broad spectrum of doctrines yet only ONE EKKLESIA. Join the EKKLESIA and it will have an impact upon which org, but not on your having been born from above, Saved in the here and now, awaiting the gathering together JESUS is soon to proclaim.
I said he has low standards for adopting Paul’s statement as some kind of proof that Our Lady is not ever-virgin.
He tried to play an ace against the Church Fathers, only it was a seven.
Claud, Mary was a virgin while she gestated Jesus in her womb. I personally believe she did not lose that status as Jesus was born, for I believe He came from her womb as easily as He left the rock sealed tomb. BUT, whether she had children thereafter or not is not essential to my having been born from above, so I take Paul’s words as sufficient to inform me that Jesus had sisters and brothers. I can think of at least three very plausible ways to explain Paul’s words, but find no advantage in any of the three except the common sense one or two I could cite for you. somehow I don’t think you want to hear those two explanations though, since both would be contrary to the traditions you hold to be essential to your eventual salvation ...
The Catholic trust in "tradition" over the Word never ceases to amaze.
A clue no one seems to be noticing relates to the scene when Jesus’s mother and brothers came to the house where He was teaching and sent word that they wished to speak with Him outside. In His day, the eldest son was called upon if the father of the family was gravely ill or dead. The eldest of the family was the focal point of family council and decisions when an urgent issue arose. It was also the eldest, in the absence of the father, who was focused upon by the authorities if those authorities had issue with the family or a member of the family. Jesus would not be the eldest of Mary’s family if He had older brothers from a previous Joseph marriage.
No need to rehash the arguments of the Reformation with me. I know and understand your general position because I live in a Protestant country.
I just think it is dead wrong and ultimately fatal to the salvation you claim to already possess.
Elizabeth I was referred to as “the Virgin Queen”, even though she was no virgin as we use the word. The meaning was that she was unmarried and had no children.
The meanings of words change over time — check out “terrific” (one of Trump’s favorite words) and “awful”, for example.
(This is one reason that “original intent” is so important — we apply teh meaning of the word when it was written, and not the contemporary meanignof a word like “militia”.)
The Greek texts from which everyone works are translations — the Old testament was created (whether written down or not) in Hebrew, and the words of Jesus were spoken in Aramaic. Every translator af anything makes editorial decisions.
