More dominant in seminaries than communist teaching was homosexual activity. At least in my observation in Chicago Archdiocese that alone is what caused seminarians to leave ... or stay in the 60s and 70s. Homosexual activity was practiced by both right wing and left wing priests. It was their special bond, special calling.
It definitely involved a Protestant viewpoint that rejects transubstantiation (thereby allowing “regular” people to handle the Host); the Protestants in this case were simply baptized Catholics.
“Eucharistic ministers” are not in the catechism of the Catholic Church; it does mention “extraordinary ministers” that can be used in special cases - and it requires authorization each time.
