Can you explain David and Bathsheba? Was David forgiven?

David repented but God still took away the child conceived by adultery despite David's best "effort". Uriah was dead which allowed Bathsheba to marry again. Also due to stubborn traditions, Bathsheba had no choice once summoned by a king to "perform", even if married.
Polygamy was also a stubborn tradition of kings during those days, which eventually screwed up the future of Israel. Imagine if Abraham (Not a king though) just kept himself to his wife. We have Ishmael used as spiritual leverage still to this day causing havoc.
David was forgiven, but paid a heavy price because God cared and used hardships to steer David back. What should be scary to an unrepentant sinner is the fact that hardships are not occurring. Could be God's way of saying "you are not worth my thought"/have become a reprobate.
