(Revelation 8)

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer.

8 When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.

3 Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne. 4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

The Trumpets.

6 Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.

7 The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, 9 a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

4 And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.

5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

When I was a child, growing up in the City of Boston, one of my favorite places to visit was an old mansion in Jamaica Plain called "The Childrens' Museum". It was there that I learned about dinosaurs, and, at the time, nobody seemed to know how or why they had disappeared from the earth. It just seemed to me that they were "too big and powerful to fail"! In modern times, the generally accepted theory is that a very large meteorite or even a comet, crashed into the Earth somewhere near Yucatan, Mexico, which killed them all (except the ones that turned into birds, LOL!). If that theory had been advanced even a half-century earlier, scientists all over the world would have laughed it off.

Yet, here we have a 2000 year old prophecy that indicates that such a thing is possible. A meteorite CAN kill off more than two thirds of the life on the planet, and many scientists are warning us every year about "near-misses" and "possible collisions" with bunches of space rocks. There was a very close call right after 9/11/01 that I thought was certainly going to be the "BIG ONE", but, Thank God, it missed us.

Here is an ironic note that may, or may not mean anything. When the NIV Bible was first translated back in the early 70's (long before the nuclear disaster that poisoned a large area in the Ukraine), the Ukrainian-Language Version of the NIV Bible translated the name of the star "Wormwood" with an old-fashioned word for the herb that is a similar poison. The word they used was Chernobyl.

Another observation on today's reading is this: If sometimes you feel your intercessory prayers aren't reaching God, and they seem to be bouncing off the ceiling back at you, remember this passage. Those prayers are sweet-smelling incense to God, being borne to His Throne by Angels.
