Some have claimed that anyone who has been baptized anywhere anytime is by default a Catholic, whether they know it or not and whether they like it or not.
If you are baptized into Christ you become a member of His church which He established "on this rock" which has continued since His time. That church is called catholic or universal. Martin Luther began the great schism or protestant revolution and many small "c" christian churches resulted from that time. Like it or not as you say, there is still only one Catholic Church and it can trace itself back to Christ and his Church which he established on that rock, Peter.
I guess we kind of broke that mold, didn't we? By the way, I was told I couldn't interpret the Bible on my own. When I asked someone why he was interpreting the Bible on his own, he said he wasn't interpreting it, he was just reading it, and telling me what it said. I got a good laugh out of that.
