L.A. City Attorney Pressures Pregnancy Center to Comply with State Law, Provide Info About Abortion

A Los Angeles pregnancy center that failed to comply with a state law requiring it to provide clients with information about free or low-cost family planning services, prenatal care, contraception and abortions has agreed to cooperate, City Atty. Mike Feuer announced Thursday.

After the Pregnancy Counseling Center in Mission Hills missed an Aug. 14 deadline to correct violations, the city attorney’s office moved to file a lawsuit under a state law that bars unfair business practices and carries a possible $2,500 daily penalty. Feuer also informed the center that his office would seek a temporary restraining order to force it to comply.

By Tuesday afternoon, the center’s counsel contacted the city attorney’s office to say it would make the necessary changes. Representatives for the center could not be reached for comment.

“The reason for the urgency in my view is that when a woman is desperately seeking the kind of counseling that would lead them to come to one of these centers, it is imperative that she has full information about her reproductive choices,” Feuer said.

In May, Feuer sent letters to six reproductive health facilities in the city of Los Angeles, informing them of their legal obligations under the Reproductive FACT (Freedom, Accountability, Comprehensive Care and Transparency) Act, which took effect in January.

According to the law, all licensed facilities offering pregnancy-related services must post and disseminate information at the time of check-in about how to access alternative resources, including abortions. The law also requires unlicensed facilities to disclose that they are unlicensed.

Last month, undercover investigators from the Los Angeles County Department of Business and Consumer Affairs discovered that three facilities were not in compliance.

Feuer notified the non-compliant centers that they had 30 days to correct the violations, according to the law. After 30 days, investigators determined.......

So, the fact that abortuaries routinely lie about their “services” (in fact, their business model is developed around lying to their clients) is perfectly okay, but let someone actually try to assist pregnant women, and it is a crime.

If I were running one of the pregnancy centers, I would give patients full disclosure about the nature of abortion prior to giving them any contact information for an abortuary. Before ever receiving that phone number, they would know exactly what abortion is—and preferably would already have seen their living baby via ultrasound.

An argument can be made that pregnant women go to pregnancy centers because they DON’T want to be pressured into abortion. What business is it of the government to force pregnancy centers to pressure them anyway?

You have the freedom to use whatever speech we tell you to use.

Between that and the constantly lying anti-vaping commercials, I wish I had gone into law instead, as I’d love to beat these people up with the constitution.

It`s a pity the pro life centers don`t see how to use the law to their advantage.Gather the info on how racist PP is and show minority women how to sue.Use the film’s of babies being sliced and diced.Show the women the gruesome pictures of what an abortion really is.If you are forced to talk about abortion then go for it and show them EVERYTHING.Otherwise, you will be helping to murder babies,too..

These centers are ministries offering their services FREE of charge. It is ridiculous to pretend women don’t already know all about their “options” in this day and time. I seriously DOUBT abortionists are willfully providing alternatives to abortion like pregnancy help centers to women who come in their facilities. I would fight this tooth and nail!

I remember twenty some years ago when we fought in Florida for the “Woman’s Right to Know Act” which would have given women seeking abortions information about the development of their babies, the risks of abortion and to let them know there were no charge resources available to them as alternatives. One of the Democrat senators snidely remarked that “women already know all this stuff” and such a law was unnecessary. The bill failed - thanks in large part to wishy-washy Charlie Crist who was a Republican back then. The more we allow these God-less Liberals to infringe on the rights of Christian ministries to operate without their interference, the more they will press until they close every single one. We CAN’T let this happen!

Totally agree! Most centers DO tell women all the gory details about abortion as well as discuss the developing baby inside them. Many also provide free ultrasounds if the woman wants one. These places do amazing work and need the continuing financial support of all prolife people.

I wonder why this law wasn’t challenged at the federal level.

Do Abortionists have to tell prospective clients of alternatives ?

If not, there is no equal protection.

I don't see the problem: Simply provide plenty of information - including graphic full-color photos of murdered fetuses. The center would then be in full compliance with the law!

After all, the law doesn't require the information to be completely non-committal / neutral, does it?

My first thought was, “Oh good. They are going to require abortion mills to provide statistics on injuries and deaths.”

No such luck.

Second thought: “They are going to require abortion mills to provide information on alternatives to abortion.”

Ha. Ha.

Truth: They are going to require crisis pregnancy centers to tell people they can also get an abortion, and probably require them to give out a list of phone numbers.
