I have long lamented that it it was not included a part of the New Testament.

Nice article, I wish the author would have gone into more detail regarding the citations to the OT and NT. He is correct, no cites of the Gospel of John (suggesting it had not yet been written) and no formal cites to Saint Paul’s epistles. Fr. Jurgen’s Faith of the Early Fathers Volume 1 in its commentary and notes (pp.1-6) does note that 1 Thess 4:16, 2 Thess 2:9 and 1 Cor. 15:52 are alluded to. The Gospel of Matthew is cited extensively. 1 Peter 2:11 and 2 Peter 3:3 are also cited. As for the OT, Exodus, Duet, Lev and Proverbs are cited. Also, the LXX version seems to be preferred and from that OT Canon, The books of Sirach, Tobit and Wisdom are cited.
