The only condition on God's gift is that we receive it by faith. Any work that must be done to either get OR keep the gift renders it no longer a gift.
Heb 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,
What does God call us to "obey"? Jesus answered this:
Salvation is the gift. There's nothing we can do to earn that gift. But God can grant it based on the condition of obedience.
The obedience God requires is FAITH. For us to believe. Our good works do not earn grace because grace would cease to be grace.
Again, God requires faith for us to receive His gift of eternal life. That's how we "come to the party".
The poster is defending works in a round about way, by attaching his works to the Grace. It is an insult to God that satan used even on Eve! If God is so weak that I must be responsible to earn a gift given, then it is not yet received. The poster is unable to see that reality because the poster is still under the influence of pride in self. To insist that works must be done to retain The Grace of God ( Who ALONE is powerful enough to keep HIS PROMISE to raise us up in the way that we should go) then that god is not giving a gift, rather that god is giving a task. The serpent told Eve, in so many words, that the God Who walked with them in the cool of the evening was keeping things from them so they should strive by deeds to learn what God was not telling them and satan knew but not them. LIES are usually traceable back to the father of lies, a murderer from the start. Folks like the poster and ES and Rood feel insulted when it is pointed out to them that they are following a satanic lie with regards to works.
