Benedict Endorses Pope Francis in Unprecedented Vatican Ceremony

Backing from retired pope at event to mark his 65th year as a priest may help Francis gain favour among church conservatives

Benedict XVI has endorsed Pope Francis’s ministry in an unprecedented Vatican ceremony featuring a reigning pontiff honouring a retired one on the 65th anniversary of his ordination as a priest.

The ceremony in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace served in part to show continuity from Benedict to Francis amid continued nostalgia from some conservatives for the former’s tradition-minded papacy.

Francis had invited the entire Vatican Curia, or bureaucracy, to celebrate Benedict’s anniversary, and prelates turned out in force for the rare occasion of being able to greet each man in white.

While Francis presided, it was Benedict who stole the show with an off-the-cuff mini theology lesson sprinkled with Greek and Latin that showed that the mind of the German theologian is still going strong at 89.

In it, Benedict thanked Francis for letting him live out his final years in the beauty of the Vatican gardens, where he said he felt protected.

“Thank you, Holy Father, for your goodness, which from the first moment of your election has struck every day of my life,” Benedict said, speaking without notes. “We hope that you can go forward with all of us on this path of divine mercy, showing us the path of Jesus toward God.”

Benedict’s vote of confidence may help quell conservative criticism of the current pope’s loose theology, lack of attention to liturgy and emphasis on mercy over morals.

Benedict said... “We hope that you can go forward with all of us on this path of divine mercy, showing us the path of Jesus toward God.”

We HOPE you can. That’s a “vote of confidence”?

No it’s not

The title does not match the story.

If he’s still going strong why is there a new pope?

Notice he feels safe and protected by the hundreds if not thousands of armed guards ready to defend the walls of the Vatican. None of which the common people should have according to his successor.

It’s getting increasingly difficult to argue these are not the end times.

Bizarre.

Pope Benedict is being gracious and refusing to undercut his successor. I think the old fashioned term for this was call “Showing Class.”

Sorry, but God isn’t concerned with “Showing Class” when His Word is being undermined!

Sad you’re making excuses for this!

Benedict would really ‘show class” by staying quiet.

“Okay, Benedict, you’re on. Remember, I feed you. I keep you safe. Capiche? You don’t wanna have to make me bring on any excitement at your age. So here, kiss my ring and get out there and sell.”

The Red Pope serves not the church but his elite masters, who ultimately worship Satan.

A commie, homo and muslim loving Pope: Truly we are in the end times.

Once again we have stark evidence that Pope Benedict had no reason to resign. Popes can function, and have functioned, very well in their advanced years, given the tremendous opportunity they have to delegate their day-to-day duties to subordinates. Something is amiss.

I’m guessing you’d prefer to have Benedict rake Francis over the coals about ‘destroying God’s church’?

Someone made Pope Benedict an offer he couldn’t refuse?

because he’s gone mad and believes that he can wish a papal duarchy into existence... with one pope being contemplative (himself) and one being active (Bergoglio).

I'm sure they forced him to say these things. /s

meanwhile.....Benedict endorses "Pope" Francis? Color me shocked. Both equally modernist. One just did a better job of fooling folks.

Yes, that would be appropriate considering what this current pope has done!

Good grief, are you for real? Francis is actively undermining God’s Word, and you appear cool with it!

i believe that Benedict has genuine faith, but has been deceived.

i believe Bergoglio has no faith and is here to spread chaos and lead as many souls astray as he can. he’s a marxist. he’s a narcissist. he hates the USA. he’s probably a sodomite.

i’m a Catholic struggling with how to make sense of what’s happening to the church, although i think this has all been in the works for at least 50 years now (since Vatican II) and we are in the beginning stages of the end times. how long that will last, i do not know. generations? centuries??

i just know that right now, billions and billions of mortal souls are at risk. this culture is toxic. it’s ok to disparage Christianity in public, but say one word against islam and you’ll be hauled off to jail for hatespeak.

what has happened to this world?!
