Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Character Studies From The Bible
Peter
(The Gospel according to Luke)
24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again. 8 Then they remembered his words.
9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
(Luke 24)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
Just as it is in many areas of the Middle East, even to this day, the role of women in the First Century was very limited and marginal. However, those areas inhabited by the People of Israel held women in somewhat higher esteem than their pagan neighbors. According to the Law of Moses, women had property rights, and much of the Law is dedicated to the protection of widows, orphans, and daughters. Nevertheless, women are sometimes ignored in the study of the Gospel, due to the towering figures of Christ and His Apostles.
Here we see a group of women who were devoted to Christ, doing a noble thing. They are braving the Military Might of Rome and the Wrath of their own Religious Leaders to go to the Tomb and anoint the Body of their Beloved Teacher, so brutally slain three days ago. They would have gone sooner, but the Sabbath and the Passover rules deterred them. The Apostles, presumably, are still in hiding. I imagine that Peter is with them, but still dissolved in paroxysms of grief and shame.
The Ladies are the first to hear of the Resurrection. They bring the Good news back to the Apostles (Peter included) and tell them. At first, the Apostles don't believe them, not because they are women, but because what they are saying is so incredible! Nevertheless, Peter and John run to the Tomb, so, in their hearts, they KNEW the women had seen Something Wonderful!
Once again, Peter is energized. He is not afraid of what he will find in the Tomb...in fact, he is excited...and RUNS there.

Our nation is close to turning from its role as friend of Israel.
Dear Lord, please draw us back to Yourself. Help us to repent and desire your will. Then we will go back to our friendship with Israel and our own nation can be healed.

Amen! Numbers 6: 23 Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them: The Lord bless you, and keep you [protect you, sustain you, and guard you]; The Lord make His face shine upon you [with favor], And be gracious to you [surrounding you with lovingkindness];The Lord lift up His countenance (face) upon you [with divine approval],And give you peace [a tranquil heart and life]. 27 So Aaron and his sons shall put My name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.
And this we do and proclaim and agree in Jesus name. Amen.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM! And for the Preservation of the Valiant Israeli Nation!
"The Angel Appearing To The Three Mary's At The Sepulchre" William Blake - 1803

_ |
OW upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. |
And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
And they remembered his words,
And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.
Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
