Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Peter

(The Gospel According to Mark)

13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve[a] that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons. 16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), 17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

(Mark 3)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

We jump ahead in our story to the Third Chapter of Mark to see that Jesus has changed the names of some of his Disciples (They are not Apostles yet!). Simon, the rough fisherman, gets the name of "Cephas" or "Peter". Peter is from the Greek, and means "Rock" or "Stone". It is a hard name for a hard man. A certain professional wrestler turned actor (who is really a sweet guy who lived near me in S. Florida) went by the name of "The Rock". This resulting name change gave him a whole new image, and everybody knows him as "The Rock" to this day.

The name change to reflect a new relationship to the Almighty is a venerable tradition that goes back to Abraham. Both Abraham and Sarah's names were changed by God when they became His Own.

Jacob experienced a radical name change when God changed it from Jacob (usurper) to Israel (Wrestles With God).

"Simon" was a perfectly good name for a First Century Jew, but Jesus had His Own reasons for changing it.

Just as God did not give all the Patriarchs new names, neither did Jesus change the names of all His Disciples. Maybe some day we will find out why this is so!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
