Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Peter

(The Gospel According to Mark)

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

(Mark 1)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In the Torah, a legal matter is decided upon the testimony of, not just one, but Two Witnesses. The testimony must agree in essence, but any judge will tell you that if all the minor details line up EXACTLY, then there was probably collusion involved, and the testimony may not be reliable. Some minor differences are expected, as everybody has a different point of view.

The Story of Jesus is supported by the testimony of not two, but Four Witnesses: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. In the Gospels we have four testimonies, which agree on all the important things, but have different details depending upon the perspective of the authors.

It is speculated that Mark (who has a Roman name) wrote his Gospel for Roman eyes. He includes details about daily life, lots of action, and "just the facts, Ma'am", which would appeal to the practical Roman mind.

Here we see Peter, a commercial fisherman, working his nets on the Sea of Galilee. From this Passage, we can see that fishing was a family business, as "Zebedee and Sons" worked alongside Peter and his brother Andrew. Sometimes the catch was abundant, sometimes not, but the daylight hours were spent doing very hard work, and the nights were taken up by maintaining equipment and repairing nets and boats. It was a rough life, and from further study we shall see that Peter was a rough, impulsive man.

Paul also worked a trade, but spent many years studying his religion at the feet of one of the greatest teachers of Judaism, the Rabbi Gamaliel. Peter, however, did not have that luxury, and probably did not have much of an education. In fact, his region around the Galilee was known as a rural, semi-literate rough area. In modern-day terms, Peter might even be a "Redneck"!

Further study will show, especially in the Book of Acts, that in spite of his rough origins, Peter was a religious man. He did his best to follow the rules, and was conscientious about the dietary laws and other traditions.

Peter's impulsiveness (or perhaps incredible faith) is demonstrated here as he drops everything and follows Jesus without hesitation. This quality of his has both good and bad results, as we shall soon see!

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

_ OW after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.

And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
