High Profile Missouri Businesses Oppose Religious Objections Law

High profile corporations join coalition campaigning against legislation that would protect businesses objecting on religious grounds to same-sex marriages

More than 60 businesses including some of Missouri’s biggest corporate names joined a coalition opposed to state legislation that would protect businesses objecting on religious grounds to same-sex marriages.

Agricultural giant Monsanto, prescription drug benefits manager Express Scripts, and pet food maker Nestle Purina are among employers to join the recently formed Missouri Competes, according to gay rights advocacy group Promo, which released the list just hours before a House committee heard testimony from business, sports and religious groups. Dozens crammed in the Capitol basement for the late-night hearing.

The formation of the coalition comes amid business pushback to legislation in other states protecting those opposed to same-sex marriage.

Several states and cities have banned tax-payer funded travel to Mississippi in response to a law signed by the Republican governor last week to let workers cite religious beliefs to deny services to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

The Missouri Chamber of Commerce, which opposes the Missouri measure, has pointed to Indiana as another example of the business backlash. A public-private tourism group has estimated that Indiana lost $60 million in hotel profits, tax revenues and other economic benefits after Indiana Republican Gov Mike Pence last year signed religious-objections legislation.

Leaders of utility company Ameren and BJC HealthCare are among those who signed a letter earlier this month in opposition to business provisions in the Missouri measure.

Supporters argue the Missouri law is intentionally narrower than laws passed in other states and is necessary to protect some businesses from being forced to violate religious beliefs.

The proposal would allow voters to decide whether to amend the Missouri Constitution to ban government penalties against businesses that cite religion while declining goods or services........

When are we going to stop these rich corporations from trying to influence our democracy and buy legislation? /sarcasm

No one is forcing them not to object if they are okay with debauchery and wickedness.

The law just lets folks who want to, to object to the perverts run amuck in out society without fearing PC legal shenanigans.

Gee whiz, Wally, it’s almost like companies that are government rent-seekers are doing (leftist) government’s ideological bidding for them!

Sometimes it’s smarter NOT to take a position.

Focus on feeding the poor or something worthwhile.

....which are detached from reality.

A group of 20something, unemployed, unmarried, childless, deeply in debt people threaten to boycott product X, company Y or city Z and companies and cities roll over.

WHY? These people collectively don’t have $1,000 in disposable income. The idea that a boycott would have any measurable impact, to say nothing of a large impact, is laughable.

Meanwhile, high earners, two-income households, and people sick to the back teeth of PC keep moving - often long distances - to find locales that aren’t stark raving bonkers.

I believe nearly ALL of this homosexual activism is originating from the federal government.

Obama has placed many militant homosexual troglodytes in every federal agency. The big corporations have been told to toe the line or else. It is pro-homosexual extortion, just like what you see with Jess Jackson and Al Sharpton.

In the debates they asked if the candidates would ever attend a gay wedding and not one of them answered correctly. The correct answer was to say it is not a relevant question. The question is would you force another person to attend and participate in a gay wedding against his or her will? That is exactly what the left is doing to business owners
