“Scripture says that the Roman soldiers who were guarding Jesusâs body on the cross, looked out and saw the Temple doors rent.”
The doors didn’t rent/tear, the veil/curtain rent/tore which was inside. The Scripture doesn’t say in Matthew, Mark, or Luke that the soldiers seen the veil/curtain rent/tear, but instead they seen the rocks split, felt the earthquake, and the graves where opened and the dead came back to life.
Matthew 27:51 King James Version (KJV)
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
Heb 9:2 For a tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place. 3 Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place.
CONTEXT! I concede that you are probably right in regards to the veil being the inner veil, however, for that to be seen, the door must also have been made to open by itself which Jewish history confirms. And the context of Mt 27:51-51 is what the soldiers saw which is what is written in verse 51 which included the veil being torn from top to bottom. Otherwise, there is no purpose for it even being recorded in the setting & context it was recorded, that which the soldiers saw that brought them to the conclusion the Jesus was the Son of God. A mere earthquake would not have done this, it was a combination of ALL the events listed, the veil being the significant key to the conclusion they came to.
Also, we do not see earthquakes, we feel them. The destruction we see is the result of the earthquake, not the earthquake itself. Who made the earthquake to happen? The veil they saw torn in two was the answer to that question, God Himself, as a sign of His anger so to get His people to turn from their wickedness and back to Him through His Son.
