Of course the Catholic church didn't reform. They kicked him out and would not give up on their abuse of power and corruption.
When he cooked up his absurd, un-Biblical, self-made doctrines and either pinned them to a Church door (and written in Latin(!) no less, if it even happened at all) or disseminated them in some other way, I think that was a pretty clear indication that he had left the Church, not the other way around.
