"So God makes a down payment and then reneges on the deal?"

It's not God who reneges.

"2 Corinthians 5:5"

The most accurate translation of 2 Cor 5:5 says "pledge," not "guarantee."

"For the word *arrabon* - "an earnest, earnest-money, a large part of the payment, given in advance as a security that the whole will be paid afterwards.""

Yes, that's what a down payment is.

GOD makes the down payment.

It’s HIS deal.

If it doesn’t go through, it’s GOD who reneges on the deal by failing to pay the rest.

And you never answered the questions.

What about the promises that Jesus made? They don’t count for anything?

So Peter was wrong here? God isn't really keeping our inheritance in heaven for us?

God's power isn't really guarding us through faith?

1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
