Kirsten Powers: Becoming a Christian Ruined My Love of Christmas
Christian Today ^ | December 17, 2015 | Kirsten Powers

Posted on 12/20/2015 9:11:23 AM PST by QT3.14

...During this time I was single, and friends set me up on a lot of dates. When they asked me if there were any deal breakers, I explained there was only one: No religious people.

Shortly after I made that declaration, I started dating a guy who mentioned, in passing, that he attended a Presbyterian church. I flinched. But I liked him, and because I was so religiously illiterate, I didn’t understand that some Presbyterian churches are evangelical. I assumed he was a cultural Christian, like the few other Christians I knew.

A few months into the relationship he confronted me with a question I didn’t expect to get from any person I knew: “Do you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior?”

How can that *ruin* one's love for Christmas...unless that love was based on some earthly, hedonistic attitude?

Didn't read the article, then? Her materialistic idea of what Christmas meant prior to conversion was what was "ruined".

It seems like a pretty good article, better than I would expect, but something to keep in mind I think is that she admittedly hasn’t believed in Christ for very long, and so not surprisingly she does hold many antichristian beliefs otherwise.

At this point, then, there is really no saying yet whether she will turn from those beliefs to Christ, as He will ask her to, or else decide to hold onto those beliefs and either proclaim that Christianity wasn’t true after all, or embrace a self-proclaimed Christian church that fits her views. In the latter case, that might mean that at some point she testifies in public that she tried Christianity and was a “true believer” but eventually saw the fundamental errors in it. Left-wing sites frequently publish similar apostate pieces, and the ex-Christian site, if you’ve seen it, is all about that. Those people actually testify against Christ, usually going into great detail about how supposedly devoted they were to Christ, only to honestly discover how the Christian faith is false (never realizing how hollow their accounts sound to those who do believe in Christ), and no doubt they influence some people as witnesses against Him. Or she will simply take what she wants to believe from Christianity, whatever conforms to what she thinks is true, and proclaim that Christianity is about a few main points Jesus made in the Sermon on the Mount, and that there is no point in taking the Bible as God’s Word because it was actually written by man, like every other religion.

So while it’s a pretty good article, I have to hope it’s sincere, and not to build up some credibility with evangelical Christians in order to try to influence some, particularly younger ones, away from Christ.

You are right. Baby Christians are still weak in their faith.

Until she is solidly grounded...be careful.

As a Methodist, I have known many people through the years that have gone to church every Sunday and still remained unfilled by the Holy Spirit.

As Saint Paul says, we must work out our Salvation.

It is a free gift, but we must reconcile our lives to it over time...some people fail.

Try his little memoir, “A Sort of Life.” He’s an endearing writer, in a cantankerous way.

Couple of observations:

1. Pretty sure I have read about KP's dating life in previous pieces. I don't care about her relationships.

2. Celebrating Christmas by exchanging gifts does not mean one is a Pagan - it's a recognition of the Birth of Jesus. She sets this up like a zero-sum game.

3. KP mentions her father took her to church every Sunday, yet states "It [Christmas] had next to nothing to do with the birth of Christ Jesus." Perhaps she is an example of how the church is failing. Where regular attendees miss the message....or she was not paying attention?

I typically do not read her pieces and give her little credence. It would be nice to hear what she is doing to celebrate the birth of Jesus - such as a season of giving, supporting charities such as Operation Christmas Child, or event participating in Advent.

Her boyfriend who had encouraged her to seek Christ broke up with her before he even knew that she had gotten saved. Her faith is real and she has taken a stand for Christ.

Then you do not know the real story behind Nicholas the Coptic bishop

You are right. I don’t. But I do know about Santa Claus and what he means to people.

Political positions
Powers supports universal health care, believing to be a moral imperative to supply health care to all Americans. Thus, she initially supported Obama’s health care reform but later became critical of its implementation. She lamented that the laws resulted in a doubling of costs: “if I want to keep the same health insurance, it’s going to cost twice as much.” She later opined: “A lot of people who have really been screwed over by the law [and] are left without insurance or with extremely expensive insurance”, and agreed with a Ron Fournier headline in National Journal, “Why I’m getting tired of defending Obamacare.”

She opposed the “don’t ask, don’t tell” on homosexuals serving in the military, supports civil unions for same-sex couples, and sees marriage strictly as a religious institution.

Powers opposed the Fairness Doctrine, and a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning. She also supports comprehensive immigration reform and providing a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and favors gun control. She also supports closing Guantanamo Bay and transferring its prisoners to federal prisons.

Powers opposes the death penalty and supports the pro-life movement. She opposes elective late-term abortions.

Personal life
Powers briefly dated former Congressman Anthony Weiner in 2002, and remained his close friend after their romantic relationship ended. After initially defending him when the story of Weiner’s sexting scandal surfaced in May 2011, Powers later condemned his conduct and called for his resignation from Congress.

If her conversion was genuine she’ll be switching parties before long. You can’t be a born-again Christian and a Democrat.

I wish I could share your rose-colored glasses.

She was an avowed atheist before her epiphany.

Now, when I see that if and when she turns from being a non-Christian-based liberal to being a conservative TV commentator and commercial writer....and when she publicly embraces speaking up for conservative principles such as pro-life, traditional male-female marriage and other basic Christian tenets, I'll be the first to drop my cynicism.

I'm NOT saying she should publicly wear these things on her sleeve as she spars with Bill O'Reilly, for instance....but we'll know if her conversion is genuine soon enough as she continues her punditry career.

Frankly, I'm not holding my breath that she'll stay the Christian conversion course, though I do wish her well.

Then perhaps you ought to find out the history of Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus).

That it has devolved over the years does not make it any less meaningful. It is taught in my church to remind us what a true gift is
