Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Paul

10. In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, Ananias!

Yes, Lord, he answered.

11. The Lord told him, Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.

13. Lord, Ananias answered, I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.

15. But the Lord said to Ananias, Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.

17. Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit. 18. Immediately, something like scales fell from Sauls eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19. and after taking some food, he regained his strength.

(Acts 9)

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The skepticism of Ananais towards Paul's conversion is well founded! Saul of Tarsus seems to have made quite a name for himself persecuting the new Believers. Saul will learn the hard way that his fame has preceded him throughout the Roman World. These factors, however, will actually enhance his witness later on, as we shall see in the Book of Acts.

As to the speed of communications in the First century, The Romans had built a wonderful network of roads, bridges, aqueducts, and highways that facilitated travel, communication, mail service, and mobility in the Empire. Remnants of these great feats of Civil Engineering are with us to this day. In Caesaria alone (where much of Paul's saga takes place), there is a huge theater, aqueduct and many ruins from the days of Paul. We will also hear of his orations in the Great Theater of Ephesus in Turkey, which still exists. The travels and communication, letters and journeys of Paul become much more understandable once we envision the Roman Empire's infrastructure.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Numbers 6: 23 Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the way you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them: The Lord bless you, and keep you [protect you, sustain you, and guard you]; The Lord make His face shine upon you [with favor], And be gracious to you [surrounding you with lovingkindness];The Lord lift up His countenance (face) upon you [with divine approval],And give you peace [a tranquil heart and life]. 27 So Aaron and his sons shall put My name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.

And this we do and proclaim and agree in Jesus name. Amen.
