Looks to me like the Pontiff is trying to play both sides of the coin to give him cover when what he really is gunning for is revealed.

Likewise. And he probably figures that his followers aren’t going anywhere. Maybe even if he makes the church and its followers accept the gay lifestyle (which of course is a sin).
