From Kelly McLaughlin and Ollie Gilman writing at the Daily Mail:

The Pope takes on Trump: Francis makes thinly-veiled swipe at The Donald as he defends Latino immigrants who came to America at 'great personal cost' in speech to 40,000 in Philadelphia

Pope Francis made a thinly-veiled swipe at Donald Trump as the Pontiff defended Latino immigrants who came to America at ‘great personal cost’ during a moving speech to 40,000 followers in Philadelphia.

Francis called on migrants from Mexico and the rest of the world to “not feel discouraged by all the challenges and hardships” they face, saying they should never feel ashamed of their own traditions.

The Pope’s words come in direct contrast to Trump’s calls for a wall to be built along the Mexican border and for stricter controls on who can enter the U.S.

Speaking from the lectern used by President Abraham Lincoln when he delivered the Gettysburg Address, Francis directly addressed America’s Hispanic population, saying: “Thank you for opening the doors. Many of you have emigrated. I greet you with my heart.

“Many of you came to this country at great personal cost, but in the hope of building a new life. Do not feel discouraged by all the challenges and hardships you might face. I ask you not to forget that, like those who came here before you, you bring many gifts to this new nation of yours....

Your Post #16.

I have not seen this coverage even when Obama won.

If only more members of the public could realise the incredible juggernaut that the press is. Somehow they zeroed in on the now president and literally drove him to victory. In a similar vein, but not as drastic, they damned President George W. Bush. The coverage of the Pope's visit went far and beyond honest coverage.

It is as if they are all interconnected by an invisible and unbreakable thread. To me, and I include much of the Canadian television media, it has Orwellian overtones. (please excuse my ramble).

OK, I just went through all the comments, and somebody has to say it: “Lighten up, Francis.”

This Pope has damaged the Church immeasurably.

A moron and a hypocrite.

The enemies see the weakness and he has pissed off his right wing allies big time.

Prophesied to be the Last Pope, the mozlums can wipe out the Vatican with a couple of hundred insurgents and it would be over so quick nothing could be done.

The Pope should be thanking the United States for preventing the anti-religion empire of the USSR from continuing to damage the world and suppress the religious freedoms of those within their borders - including the countrymen of Pope John Pall II. He should be thanking the US for its huge role in stoping the genocide of the Jews during WWII. By the way, what was the Vatican doing within its wall when Mussolini was cavorting with the genocidal maniac Hitler?

He should be thanking the US for historically being the place that has said ‘give us your tired, your poor, your hungry’, and for being as incredibly tolerant as a nation as we have been. He should not expect us to commit national suicide to curry the favor of the left - the same left that worships a socioeconomic system that steals self-determinism from people, suppresses their right to worship as they see fit, and has led to the deaths of 100s of millions - including assassinations of those who did not ‘toe the line’ politically.

I am Catholic, and am grieving.

While I am Catholic, I take great offense in hearing the pope criticize America and encourage people to invade our country, to undermine our nation, culture, traditions, etc. Why doesn’t the pope instead focus on fixing failed countries like Mexico and elsewhere that are dumping their unwanted citizens into the US?

We should bill Mexico for all of the expenses their citizens create for us.

The Pope encouraging people to "not feel discouraged by all the challenges and hardships" that it takes to commit mortal sin.

Take a flying leap off a short pier, Francis. (What I really want to say to him would get me banned.)

If the pope continues to play this self-destructive game, Trump may end up having the vatican — not mexico — pay for the wall. :)

The Papal apartment could accommodate at least three islamist families.

I read somewhere that the Vatican also has the strictest immigration policy in the world. Hypocrisy does not begin to cover what the sucky Pope is engaged in.

Precisely what “gifts” do they bring Mr.Pope? And If those gifts are so great why not take a couple hundred back with you to the Vatican?

Nice of him to come to our soil and specifically applaud those that sneaked in here, many who live off hard working tax payers dimes, while admonishing us law-abiding citizens who only want law and order in our land.

Why do we have to have progressive liberals in charge all facts of our lives it seems.
