Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Daniel

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia[a] and put in the treasure house of his god.

3 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility— 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.[b] 5 The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service.

6 Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 7 The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today we start a new character study, that of the Prophet Daniel. In the Hebrew Bible, Daniel is not grouped with the other Prophets, but in another group called "Writings". This is not to denigrate Daniel's position in Scripture, and a Good Hebrew Scholar might be able to explain better why this is the case. Perhaps, because Daniel's Apocalyptic Visions concern the entire world, rather than specifically Israel, or that part of this Book is in Aramaic, the Ancients put him in with the other "Wisdom" Books, Like Psalms and Proverbs, not a bad place to be at all!

Anyway, we are introduced to Daniel as he is a youth from a noble family, taken captive into Babylon. He and his three friends are placed in a facility where they will be groomed to become attendants to the King of Babylon. Their names, religion, education, and culture are robbed from them, and although Scripture doesn't say this, it is very probable, that according to the custom of the time, they were emasculated as well. The incredible trauma and barbarity imposed upon these young men can't even be imagined! And yet, to this day, in that very same part of the world, terrorists are inflicting these same atrocities upon Jews, Christians, Yazidis, and even Muslims who don't agree with them. The strange-looking Arabic letter at the bottom of every post on this thread, every day, reminds of of these victims of ISIS.

As we study the Character of Daniel, we will see how he, like Joseph in the book of Genesis, maintained his identity and integrity while captive in a pagan world.

It is a story for the Ages.
