We had a summer time substitute priest this morning. Mr. Mercat said that as soon as he saw him he knew it was going to be a big liberal homily. I remember emailing the pastor last time he subbed. He said he had been ordered to preach on the new encyclical. Fair enough. However, it is the Sunday that we celebrate The Assumption AND the readings today are some of the most profound regarding the Eucharist. But he wanted to talk about unplugging our dryers. This to a congregation that has many children, some families with four to six kids. Here’s this old man who maybe has two changes of clothes and he’s telling moms with babies to unplug their dryers to save the planet. And he kept yarping about it right after Holy Communion. I had to leave before the final song which I almost never did but I knew that I would be called by the Holy Spirit to confront him in the Narthex.
Your ‘pulpit fill’ priest was obviously being obedient to his human superior but was not being obedient to the scriptures and the priesthood’s mission of spreading the gospel of Christ. I’d rather have the latter type of obedient priest preaching.
