The head of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is weighing in on the firing of teacher from a Montgomery County Catholic school, who allegedly lost her job because of her same-sex marriage.
Margie Winters says she lost her job as the religious education director at Waldron Mercy Academy because of her marriage to Andrea Vittori.
More than 100 people gathered together in support Winters at General Wayne Park in Lower Merion Township on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm here to support Margie and let her know what was done to her was unjust, discriminatory and unfair," said Anthony Arechavale, parent.
"I think it's a shame she was fired because she's such a great influence on all our lives," said Stella Peterson.
Winters says the school principal knew she was gay and married when she was hired eight years ago.
She says a parent recently found out about her marriage and complained to the school's trustees.
When Winters wouldn't resign, she told Action News last week that she was then fired.
Supporters say they don't expect this from a school that teaches mercy.
"I think it's good that she loves who she wants to love and that she's happy, that's all I care about," said Katie Dewey, 7th grader.
"We need more transparency," said Tara Dolan, supporter.
Dolan, who taught at another school run by the sisters of Waldron Mercy, wants to know who's really behind the firing.

The answer, (IMHO) is that the school is still not concerned about this issue. The Sisters of Mercy are a heterodox rabble who are altogether unconcerned about issues such as this.
I believe a parent or group of parents complained to the school about this scandal, received no satisfaction and as a result, took it to a higher authority, most likely Chaput himself. The order to fire then came down from above.
“The school’s principal released a letter which said, in part, “Our school recognizes the authority of the Archbishop of Philadelphia, especially in the teacher of religion to...to continue as a Catholic school, Waldron Mercy must comply with those teachings.”
But the Archdiocese of Philadelphia said Waldron Mercy is a private Catholic school and personnel decisions are made without the oversight of the Archdiocese.
On Monday, Archbishop Charles Chaput released a statement, which reads: “Schools describing themselves as Catholic take on the responsibility of teaching and witnessing the Catholic faith in a manner true to Catholic belief. There’s nothing complicated or controversial in this. It’s a simple matter of honesty. I’m very grateful to the Religious Sisters of Mercy and to the principal and board members of Waldron Mercy for taking the steps to ensure that the Catholic faith is presented in a way fully in accord with the teaching of the Church. They’ve shown character and common sense at a moment when both seem to be uncommon.””

I am familiar with the Sisters or Mercy, and they are very much a left leaning bunch. On the way out, thankfully, in terms of acquiring novitiates nation-wide.
That quote jumped out at me, too. This is why I homeschool and don’t send my kids to the local Catholic schools. I don’t want my kids thinking this is okay.

Catholic schools can no longer give a nod and a wink to those teachers and other staff they know are living contrary to public teaching then “suddenly” discover these relationships and only then take action.
Perhaps... given her “primary consideration was to sustain Catholic identity”. Is Archbishop Chaput new to that diocese? Was there someone else at the helm these past 8 years?
Chaput has been in Philly a little under 4 years.
Do you really know the Order? And are still any actual Sisters associated with the school. Some schools seem to advertise themselves as "in the spirit of" (or some such) the Order that formerly taught there. Don't seem to be much in the way of teaching orders any more!

Yes, sadly, these days, not every Catholic school is following the teachings of the Church.
Every school member who criticized and protested this dismissal of this lesbian should be shown the door as well.
The correct question is why is the school suddenly concerned with Catholic and Education when they don’t appear to have been in the past?
Because they’re scared of the new Archbishop...and rightly so, as he appears to be one of the few high ranking prelates with a legitimate concern for doctrine...
Archbishp Chaput has been there for four years, half the time the school had the fired teacher on staff. Fear came kind of late.
