The equivalent act from the ETO would have been to attempt the rescue before the landings in Leyte. What they did was extraordinary, but wasn't practical until the landings and the distance had been closed to 30 miles and they had the support of the Filipino guerrillas. The Rangers could have but wouldn't have conducted that op otherwise because there would have been zero chance of them succeeding in saving the prisoners. The difference between calculated risk and kamikazism.
