Roman Catholicism: The One True Church?
Rapture Ready ^ | Stephen Meehan

Posted on 05/18/2015 6:05:47 PM PDT by Old Yeller

For years, growing up as a Roman Catholic, we were taught that we were members of the one true church. It was impressed upon us regularly by the parish priest during Mass while giving his homily; by the nuns all throughout my Catholic parochial school years of second through seventh grade.

It was impressed upon us during our preparation to receive for the first time the sacraments of Penance, Communion and Confirmation. And while attending CCD classes all the way through high school. (CCD is the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, an association established at Rome in 1562 for the purpose of giving religious education, normally designed for children.)

It was an established fact that we understood and we never questioned the validity of it. And to be honest, it was a matter of pride, that we were privileged enough to be members of the correct church, while all others had belonged to something else that didn’t quite measure up to the status of the Roman Catholic Church.

After all, how could it be possible that Roman Catholicism is not the one true church?

Look at what Rome has to offer: It has the priests, the nuns; the bishops; the cardinals; and of course, the Pope. They have the Sacraments; the statues; the holy water; the incense; the Stations of the Cross; the Eucharist - in which Chris supposedly physically manifests Himself into the wafer after the consecration by the priest during the Mass; the Marian apparitions—which appear mainly to Roman Catholics.

And they have the Vatican, where the Vicar of Christ (who they believe is Christ’s representative on earth), governs the faithful and makes infallible proclamations and doctrine. How can this not be the one true church? No other organization on the face of the earth comes close to offering to its flock what Rome provides for its faithful.

But, of course, to be true, one must adhere to what has been established as truth and not teach or practice what is contrary to the truth. We read in Scripture a few passages that declare what is truth and what is not. Jesus proclaimed in John 14:6:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me.”

What about foreknowledge? Unfortunately, we have diluted the meaning of that with modern fanciful theories of time travel, etc. In Paul’s day it did not imply God looking forward in time to see what we would do, then basing His actions on that. That is an unbiblical invention.

Amen. God is ALL knowing. I've never really gotten the "looked forward through time and saw all those who would believe and then...."

It IS a tough thing. But like you, I just throw in the towel and trust God and his word.

My mom died in 2007, 3 months short of her 103rd birthday. I have pictures but I do not worship them. She is dead just like Mary. My mom was the most wonderful Christian lady we have ever known and there is no telling how many people she influenced over her long life. I never, ever heard her say one bad thing about anyone. She never changed her church membership from her small childhood Primitive Baptist Church. She was deeply loved by everyone and is missed.

Just where has anyone said they hated Mary? We just do not worship her like Catholics do. It seems that y’all show hatred by saying Mary was raped.

Did I not point out that most on this thread fail to follow his commandment by their pride and arrogance in trying to do the first and their total lack of of preforming the second?

Yes; you DID make a judgment call.

I am not interested in “arguments” from people who repeat the wicked, brainless, vicious slander that Catholics are moronic enough to worship Mary.

Yes; Sir!!

Bernadine: …all gifts, all virtues, and all graces are dispensed by the hands of Mary to whomsoever, when, and as she pleases. O Lady, since thou art the dispenser of all graces, and since the grace of salvation can ONLY come through thy hands, OUR SALVATION DEPENDS ON THEE.

Bonaventure: …the gates of heaven will open to all who confide in the protection of Mary. Blessed are they who know thee, O Mother of God, for the knowledge of THEE is the high road to everlasting life, and the publication of thy virtues is the way of ETERNAL SALVATION . Give ear, O ye nations; and all you who desire heaven , serve, honor Mary, and certainly you will find ETERNAL LIFE.

Ephem: …devotion to the divine Mother…is the unlocking of the heavenly Jerusalem.

Blosius: To the, O Lady, are committed the KEYS and the treasures of the kingdom of Heaven.

Ambrose: …constantly pray ‘Open to us, O Mary, the gates of paradise, since thou hast its KEYS.

Fulgetius: …by Mary God descended from Heaven into the world, that by HER man might ascend from earth to Heaven.

Athanasius: …And, thou, O Lady, wast filled with grace, that thou mightiest be the way of our SALVATION and the means of ascent to the heavenly Kingdom.

Richard of Laurence: Mary, in fine, is the mistress of heaven; for there she commands as she wills, and ADMITS whom she wills.

Guerric: …he who serves Mary and for whom she intercedes, is as CERTAIN of heaven as if he were already there…and those who DO NOT serve Mary will NOT BE SAVED.

Anselm: It suffices, O Lady, that thou willest it, and our SALVATION is certain.

Antoninus: …souls protected by Mary, and on which she casts her eyes, are NECESSARILY JUSTIFIED AND SAVED.

Two different posters made the argument that “God” (i.e., the Protestant God) was determined to impregnate Mary without her consent.

NO one has EVER found any writings that claimed Mary was IMPREGNATED (Mormonism's stuff excepted).

The Book (that Catholics assembled) says she was OVERSHADOWED.

Luke 1:35   Douay-Rheims Bible
And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Mormons deny the virgin birth of Mary:

The Mormon Church Teaches That:

  • Our God is an exalted man of flesh and bone
  • He physically lives with His many wives near the star Kolob
  • Worthy Mormon men can also become Gods, like Him
  • Our God is one of many Gods and serves a God of His own!
  • God came down to earth in the flesh and was the physical father of Jesus
  • You should not trust the Bible in this matter. It is wrong.
  • Trust their prophets.
  • Read what the Mormon leaders say about our Savior and the Virgin Mary.

How can Mormons claim they believe in the virgin birth if God had sex with Mary?

They change the definition of the word virgin. Mormons feel that they can still use the phrase "virgin birth" because God was an IMMORTAL being who had sex with Mary, not a mere mortal man. And this is exactly what Bruce McConkie, (top LSD theologian, and one of the Mormon 12 Apostles, died in 1985) said:

  • "For our present purposes, suffice it to say that our Lord was born of a virgin, which is fitting and proper, and also natural, since the Father of the Child was an immortal Being" (The Promised Messiah, pg. 466).

In other words, if Joseph had sex with Mary she would not have been a virgin, but since God had sex with Mary, she remains a virgin.

  • By "Virgin birth", Mormons mean that no mortal human had sex with Mary, but since God had sex with Mary, and He is immortal, she remains a virgin!

B. Gods Must Have Wives

C. Mary And God Were Married

D. Joseph was Her Second Husband

E. The Bible Is Wrong

F. God Is A Man

G. An Act Of The Flesh

H. Not Of The Holy Ghost

I. Bruce R. McConkie, deceased member of the 12 Apostles (d.1985) and leading LDS theologian, writes in Mormon Doctrine:

It is indeed a power pro-life message that Mary chose the rigors of child bearing instead of rejecting the Holy One of God.

Any choosing that went on 2000 some years ago was by JOSEPH!

He 'chose' not to divorce her!

Absolutely correct.

Did you ever ask your mother to pray for you? DOES she pray for you? Does that make your mother God?

Good grief....are you really trying these arguments?? While we are instructed in the Word to pray for each other, and this refers to living people on earth, we are never instructed to pray to anyone in Heaven other than to God/Jesus.

Plus I've never prayed to my mom nor have I relied upon my mom for my salvation, nor do I think I can get things done through my mom that Jesus won't do for me as catholics believe about Mary.

Do you have a photo of your mother? Do you worship it?

While we all have pictures of our parents, kids, etc, the difference is we do not bow down in front of those pictures and invoke prayers to those pictures as catholics do Mary.

Have you ever kissed your mother? Is that worship?

Good grief....that is about as lame an attempt at apologetics as I have ever seen. I guess priests don't receive much formal apologetics training.

When you asked your wife to marry you, did you get down on one knee? Did you think she was God?

No, wait....this was about as lame as your prior question. Again, I've never prayed to my wife nor do I invoke her name for salvation as catholics do Mary.

Worship does not consist in gestures or words, but in an act of the intellect and will. Catholics are well aware that God is God and that Mary is a creature.

From their actions you would not be able to determine this about catholics.

Worship does not consist in gestures or words, but in an act of the intellect and will.

This is what GOD has to say about gestures.

Exodus 20:4-6“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

He is talking about acts and gestures here. Physical actions done by a physical body.

And Catholics bow down before images of Mary. An objective fact, capable of being observed, not a subjective judgment of what is going on in someone's mind.

Therefore, they sin in the eyes of God.

Since Catholics weasel around with definitions and semantics, there's no point in going there because it becomes a he said/she said kind of argument.

But making images is making images and bowing is bowing.

Additionally, anyone who prays this pray is serving, another sin.

Lady of Perpetual Help Novenas

First Novena Prayer ( 1st. and 5th. Saturday)

Behold at thy feet, O Mother of Perpetual Help,| a wretched sinner who has recourse to thee and confides in thee.| O Mother of mercy, have pity on me. I hear thee called by all the refuge and the hope of sinners:| be then, my refuge and my hope.

Assist me, for the love of Jesus Christ;| stretch forth thy hand to a miserable fallen creature who recommends himself to thee, and who devotes himself to thy service for ever.| I bless and thank Almighty God, who in His mercy has given me this confidence in thee,| which I hold to be a pledge of my eternal salvation.|

It is true that in the past I have miserably fallen into sin,| because I had not recourse to thee.| I know that, with thy help, I shall conquer.| I know too, that thou wilt assist me, if I recommend myself to thee;| but I fear dear Mother | that in time of danger, I may neglect to call on thee,| and thus lose my soul.| This grace, then, I ask of thee, and this I beg, with all the fervor of my soul,| that in all the attacks of hell I may ever have recourse to thee.| O Mary, help me.| O Mother of Perpetual Help, never suffer me to lose my God.

3 Ave’s
