The big factor is what you consider ‘believing’ in Jesus Christ; you have to include: believing the words that he spoke. You can’t believe on him while being selective with his words. In John 3:3, He said a man must be born again. People quote John 3:16 regularly, but many couldn’t begin to quote 3:8. Likewise, many overlook (as it seems you did) the following verse:
Jesus said to Peter, in Luke 22:31,32, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and WHEN THOU ART CONVERTED, strengthen the brethern.”
