Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

David

New International Version (NIV)

17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold. 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; 19 so David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”

The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.”

20 So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.[c] 21 The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them off.

22 Once more the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; 23 so David inquired of the Lord, and he answered, “Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. 24 As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” 25 So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon[d] to Gezer.

Footnotes:

a. 2 Samuel 5:8 Or are hated by David
b. 2 Samuel 5:9 Or the Millo
c. 2 Samuel 5:20 Baal Perazim means the lord who breaks out.
d. 2 Samuel 5:25 Septuagint (see also 1 Chron. 14:16); Hebrew Geba

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Just last week People in America observed the "National Day of Prayer". This special day was proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower 64 years ago and has been an annual opportunity for the Commander-In-Chief to join with America in praying for this nation. Up till very recently, Presidents of both parties have enthusiastically participated in this observance.

Eisenhower is, of course, remembered for D-Day and the subsequent defeat of the Nazis in Europe. He was also President during the height of the Cold War, and knew that one false decision could lead to the annihilation of the whole world. Since we have evidence of a beautiful prayer that he wrote before D-Day, and because of his proclamation of the National Day of Prayer, I think it is safe to assume that he approached God before making decisions that affected his whole country.

In this brief Passage of Scripture, we see David as CIC, fighting for the life of his fledgeling nation against the Philistines. He consults with God before every move, and takes God's direction, with great success. He even "carries off" the idols of the Philistines, emphasizing that the war is "Spiritual" as well as "Political".

Would that our present CIC recognized this Timeless Truth.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
