Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

David

New International Version (NIV)

David’s Lament for Saul and Jonathan

17 David took up this lament concerning Saul and his son Jonathan, 18 and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this lament of the bow (it is written in the Book of Jashar):

19 “A gazelle[a] lies slain on your heights, Israel.
    How the mighty have fallen!

20 “Tell it not in Gath,
proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,
lest the daughters of the Philistines be glad,
lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.

21 “Mountains of Gilboa,
may you have neither dew nor rain,
may no showers fall on your terraced fields.
For there the shield of the mighty was despised,
the shield of Saul—no longer rubbed with oil.

22 “From the blood of the slain,
from the flesh of the mighty,
the bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
the sword of Saul did not return unsatisfied.

23 Saul and Jonathan—
in life they were loved and admired,
and in death they were not parted.
They were swifter than eagles,
    they were stronger than lions.

24 “Daughters of Israel,
    weep for Saul,
who clothed you in scarlet and finery,
who adorned your garments with ornaments of gold.

25 “How the mighty have fallen in battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26 I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother;
you were very dear to me.
Your love for me was wonderful,

more wonderful than that of women.

27 “How the mighty have fallen!
The weapons of war have perished!”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

"How the Mighty have fallen..."

Every time a famous politician or Movie Star got caught in a career-destroying scandal, my Mom used to say this. It was one of her "wise expressions" that I thought were her own! Seeing it in the Bible for the first time about 35 years ago, I found myself smiling at the memory of Mom quoting the Bible without realizing it.

As a very young teen, I was passionate about the Singer-Songwriter Bob Dylan. I read up on him in Teen magazines, plastered his pictures on my wall, and tried to imitate him with my guitar. However, , although I knew the words to his "easy" songs (like "Blowin' in the Wind", I had no idea what the lyrics and meanings were to his very long, complex songs. Whole albums of Dylan went unappreciated until I was much, much older. I forgot about Dylan for a long time, and then he came out with an album called "Slow Train Coming". Though Dylan had often quoted Scripture in his songs before (Particularly Isaiah), this new album was nearly all New Testament Scriptures...and it changed my life. It is the reason I am writing this column today, as God used Dylan's music to "call me out".

Everybody knows David's "easy" songs. Psalm 1, Psalm 23, Psalm 91, and excerpts from others are well known and part of our culture. We quote David all the time without realizing it!

David's songs, however, appear all through the Bible, in places where we least expect them. This Lament for Saul and Jonathan comes from his heart. Even though their bond was tainted by jealousy and even attempted murder, David loved them both very much. Not only that, David recognized God's anointing on Saul, and never usurped it. By reading David's lesser-known songs, we come to know David the Man.

Come and pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Interesting about Bob Dylan. Much Scripture has crept into our songs, without realizing it. And so many greats have fallen ... from Lance Armstrong ... to the Patriot’s deflated ball in their Superbowl win.

Joining in prayer, left that other site, for all God’s people - those in Israel, our beloved America, and the rest of the world.

Amen. Been thinking a lot lately about David’s honor for Saul when I am tempted to be critical of those in authority right now. One of those easy, but hard to do Biblical admonitions, with David as an example of obedience.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places:
How are the mighty fallen!"

2 Samuel 1:19 (KJV)

_ ND David lamented with this lament-
ation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:

(Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)

The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!
Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.

Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
