There is something to be said for people who prefer to hold onto the foundation of faith no matter what stink of hell comes wafting their way.

Bill Donohue comments on several campaigns against Catholic schools...It is one thing for Catholic alumni, faculty, and students to register misgivings about school employment policies, quite another when the government, non-profits, local activists, celebrities, the media, and corporations stick their noses in where they don’t belong.

"Dagger" John Hughes says hello:

....He immediately stirred up a war over the city’s schools, then run by the Public School Society. Though the society received state funding, it was essentially a private Protestant organization that taught Protestantism and used the Protestant Bible. Worse, from Hughes’s point of view, it had pupils read such books as The Irish Heart, which taught that “the emigration from Ireland to America of annually increasing numbers, extremely needy, and in many cases drunken and depraved, has become a subject for all our grave and fearful reflection.” Hughes (with the support of New York’s 12,000 Jews) wanted an end to such sectarian education, and he wanted, above all, state aid for Catholic schools, just as the state had funded denominational schools before 1826 (with no one dreaming of calling such aid unconstitutional). The outcome of the struggle pleased no one: the Maclay Bill of 1842 barred all religious instruction from public schools and provided no state money to denominational schools.
-- from the online article How Dagger John Saved New York’s Irish

....1841 was an election year in the state of New York. Five days before the election, at a Catholic rally at Carroll Hall, [then-bishop John Joseph Hughes] presented his parishioners with a list of the candidates he favored for council and urged them to vote for them....The Constitution gave Hughes the right to advise his parishioners how to vote, but the Protestant establishment was outraged at what they saw as priestly meddling in politics. Leading the attack, James Gordon Bennett, editor of The New York Herald....Hughes's politicking paid off. All but three of the candidates he had supported were elected. In April 1842, the state passed the Maclay bill. By a majority of just one, New York's Senate voted to end religious instruction in New York's public schools....

While I am in general agreement with the sentiments in this post, I have to look at the makeup of the Catholic church in America for context; for decades American Catholics have been some of the most reliably liberal voters in the nation! How in the world could you possibly justify voting for an abortion-loving, corrupt, Jew-hating, (well you get the idea) and still call yourself a Catholic? Are you kidding? Nancy Pelosi can go to communion but a divorced Catholic can’t? The seminaries are full of homosexuals! Are you kidding?

“OUTSIDERS ATTACK CATHOLIC SCHOOLS”

Oh, please! The lion’s share of the attacks come from the CATHOLICS within the schools - students, parents, and teachers. And they ally with the outsiders, emboldening them.

You speak the truth. The two most Catholic states in the U.S., Massachusetts and Rhode Island, are radically leftist. Try explaining that.

I appreciate your sentiments, because the situation with lax-to-zero discipline in parts of the Church can truly be disgusting. But for the sake of factual accuracy,

Ah, we could use a few prelates like "Dagger John" these days.

His flock were attacked by the press in brutal terms that would shock the delicate sensibilities of most today. Thomas Nast, the brilliant but virulently anti-Catholic cartoonist, led the charge. And the Archbishop gave as good as he got - he was fearless and ferocious.

But Hughes (who kinda resembled the Duke of Wellington) not only fought the press on behalf of his people - he also put into place programs to encourage the immigrant Irish to swear off the drink, get decent jobs, get educated, and become respectable citizens. He took the long view - the day laborers' children became cops and firefighters, their children became lawyers and doctors and college professors.

Other ethnic groups should take note.

"It is one thing for Catholic alumni, faculty, and students to register misgivings about school employment policies, quite another when the government, non-profits, local activists, celebrities, the media, and corporations stick their noses in where they don’t belong."

Donohue certainly adverts to the fact that "alumni, faculty and students" have dissented from Catholic faith and morals on many a contested issue.

But the purpose of this particular article was to point out that "government, non-profits, local activists, celebrities, the media, and corporations" have weighed in in a massive way to try to undermine Catholic institutional indentity and integrity.

He's going a point, doesn't he?

You know, wisdom is a precious thing and very hard to come by.

If I was forced to choose who is wisest:

you and your absolutely baseless comments about the current state of Catholic Seminaries, or my Chocolate Lab I would definitely choose my Chocolate Lab.

She at least knows to keep her jowls shut tight rather than commenting on something she knows nothing about.

**The seminaries are full of homosexuals!**

I don’t know where you are getting your information, but I have a whole slew of links that proves your statement is in error.

Pope Benedict sent emissaries to all the seminaries to inspect and set up new procedures.

A young man applying to be a seminarian must now undergo a two day psyche test. He is interviewed over and over again by the staff. He must have references from school and parish sources as well as personal testimony by his pastor. Parents are interviewed as are friends of the family.

If you want my links, I will be glad to send them to you.

You speak the truth. The two most Catholic states in the U.S., Massachusetts and Rhode Island, are radically leftist. Try explaining that.

My theory is that it's obedience addiction. Catholicism is based on obedience. You study, but not to make up your own mind, but rather to understand what you are told to believe.

Likewise with the Left. Liberals study political issues only to the extent that they understand what political positions they are supposed to support, and learn the talking points for them. They do not study politics to form their own opinion.

IMHO, therefore, the psychological punishment-reward dynamics between Catholicism and Liberalism is exact, and the lifelong training each demands of its participants overrides the particulars of religion and politics.
