'Blessed Be, Aho, and Amen,' Wiccan Priestess Delivers Prayer for Iowa House

“Blessed Be, Aho, and Amen,” aren’t the words members of the Iowa House of Representatives are accustomed to hear at the closing of the invocation marking the House’s opening ceremonies, but that’s just what happened yesterday when a Wiccan priestess delivered the prayer.

"We call this morning to God, Goddess, Universe, that which is greater than ourselves to be here with us today,” said Deborah Maynard, who delivered the first prayer by a Wiccan in the assembly. “By the Earth that is in our bones and centers us, may all here remember our roots and those whom we are here to represent….. We call this morning to Spirit, which is ever present, to help us respect the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. Be with this legislative body and guide them to seek justice, equity and compassion in the work that is before them today.”

A number of Christian lawmakers didn’t attend the opening ceremony to protest the priestess’ historic invocation.

Others, like State Rep. Rob Taylor (R-Iowa), turned their backs during the priestess’ prayer. Taylor said he asked himself “What would Jesus do?” and decided Jesus would “be in the presence of a prayer, but peacefully protest.” He added that “everyone has the right to come into our chamber – it is the people’s chamber – and pray and she did and this was the way for me to peacefully protest.”

Members of the Fort Des Moines Church of Christ organized prayers outside the Capitol. "We feel that this is completely out of sync with the traditions of our state and our nation to seek guidance from the occult. We believe it is just not a good idea," said their Pastor Demastus, according to the Des Moines Register.

So “Blessed Be” really is a witch thing?

The witches I know say it, but I don't know that it's exclusive to wicca.

I have a real problem with this. Eventually, if followers of Christ refuse to engage the culture we live in and meet it head on, showing the love, holiness, and power of God to everyone that Christ died to save, including this witch, we'll abandon those that we are supposed to evangelize and disciple.

Its pretty tough to witness to anyone without connecting to them and making a connection with a person is impossible if you turn your back on them.

*shrug* Yes. But one can chose the time and place to contact, it doesn’t have to be in a context where engagement=validation.

Would that any and all Christians had broken out in singing...

Our God is greater, our God is stronger, God you are higher than any other.
Our God is Healer, Awesome in Power, Our God! Our God!
Our God is greater, our God is stronger, God you are higher than any other.
Our God is Healer, Awesome in Power, Our God! Our God!
And if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us.
And if our God is with us, then what could stand against.
And if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us.
And if our God is with us, then what could stand against.
Then what could stand against.

So you think the legislator should have driven her out of the chamber with a whip?

Reminds me of when I was a kid. I come from a large family and had lots of brothers and a sister. When it came to family outings pop would marshal us around like his troops, keeping us all pointed in the right direction and moving toward our objective. And then there was the sister. She was always the gadfly, flitting from one thing to the next. Pop had been raised around boys and men and really didn’t know how to deal with a small female so she often got the best of him.

We would go to a restaurant (It’s funny how I still think of McD’s as a restaurant not fast food) and there would be six orders of a cheeseburger, fries, and a Coke........and one fish fillet and a Fresca. Whatever we were doing, she had to do it differently. She never understood, or cared, that exercising some modest level of conformity served to “ease the skids” for whatever activity we were attempting, and that her insistence on “doing her own thing” often came at the expense of all of our collective time. And pop’s patience ;’)

Liberals are such contrary critters.

The prodigal son was brought low before returning to his father. There is no humility felt when seeking the peak of degradation; instead the perverse is celebrated and spread. When these lost sheep are awarded an audience before the representatives, they are gaining moment toward their peak. I don't believe they can be effectively ministered to until they reach the peak and see the vast wasteland beyond it. Some will then be brought low. The best we can do is prevent them from suckering other good people along for the ride. And that is what those lawmakers were attempting to do by not attending the ceremony. They took a stand, essentially saying this is not healthy for me, or for you. It may not be abandonment so much as it is 'tough love'.

Aren’t there enough Ahoes running around already?

If Ahoes could fly, the D.C. Capitol building would be an airport.

It’s dangerous NOT to take these people seriously! Those of faith need to pray to God: the One, True God, of the Bible as ardently as these people pray to demonic false gods.

Somehow the admonition to turn the other cheek has been corrupted into not taking any action at all. An extreme form of pacifism that I don't believe is really supported by Scripture.

It seems that it's been more of an excuse by Christians for not getting out of their comfort zone and actually having the um... backbone to take a stand.
