As regards the oft-quoted Mt. 16:18, note the bishops promise in the profession of faith of Vatican 1,

Yet as the Dominican cardinal and Catholic theologian Yves Congar O.P. states,

Unanimous patristic consent as a reliable locus theologicus is classical in Catholic theology; it has often been declared such by the magisterium and its value in scriptural interpretation has been especially stressed. Application of the principle is difficult, at least at a certain level. In regard to individual texts of Scripture total patristic consensus is rare...One example: the interpretation of Peter’s confession in Matthew 16:16-18. Except at Rome, this passage was not applied by the Fathers to the papal primacy; they worked out an exegesis at the level of their own ecclesiological thought, more anthropological and spiritual than juridical. — Yves M.-J. Congar, O.P., p. 71

And Catholic archbishop Peter Richard Kenrick (1806-1896), while yet seeking to support Peter as the rock, stated that,

“If we are bound to follow the majority of the fathers in this thing, then we are bound to hold for certain that by the rock should be understood the faith professed by Peter, not Peter professing the faith.” — Speech of archbishop Kenkick, p. 109; An inside view of the vatican council, edited by Leonard Woolsey Bacon.

Your own CCC allows the interpretation that, “On the rock of this faith confessed by St Peter, Christ build his Church,” (pt. 1, sec. 2, cp. 2, para. 424), for some of the ancients (for what their opinion is worth) provided for this or other interpretations.

• Ambrosiaster [who elsewhere upholds Peter as being the chief apostle to whom the Lord had entrusted the care of the Church, but not superior to Paul as an apostle except in time], Eph. 2:20:

Acts 15

The Council at Jerusalem
 1 Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2 This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question. 3 The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the believers very glad. 4 When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them.

 5 Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.”

 6 The apostles and elders met to consider this question. 7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. 8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. 9 He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. 10 Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”

 12 The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them. 13 When they finished, James spoke up. “Brothers,” he said, “listen to me. 14 Simon[a] has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles. 15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:

 16 “‘After this I will return
   and rebuild David’s fallen tent.
Its ruins I will rebuild,
   and I will restore it,
17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord,
   even all the Gentiles who bear my name,
says the Lord, who does these things’[b]
 18 things known from long ago.[c]

 19 “It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. 21 For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.”

The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers
 22 Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were leaders among the believers. 23 With them they sent the following letter:

   The apostles and elders, your brothers,

   To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia:

   Greetings.

 24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.  30 So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. 31 The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. 32 Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. 33 After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace to return to those who had sent them. Disagreement Between Paul and Barnabas
 36 Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, 38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord. 41 He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

Acts wasn’t written in English, now was it? That is a great starting point. Second, it isn’t just the literal translation from the original language, rather, it is the understanding of the context, references, and double and triple meanings at the time of writing.

As I have quoted Scripture, on several occasions, and on several different threads, the response is generally the same; to claim it isn’t what it says.

Case in point, John 6. Jesus clearly says we must eat of His physical body and drink His blood, yet most non-Catholics don’t believe that.

At 99 Abraham was told that he would have another child Isaac. Isaac was certainly a young man when Abraham took him on a strenuous trip to the hills of Moriah, a place where “God” showed him. (this region was where David bought the threshing floor to build an altar for sacrifice to stop the plague upon Israel. It was also the same region that Jesus was crucified!). Abraham lived to be 175 years old! So he obviously was vigorous and could still do a lot of physical work!

You are merely reasserting my point. I have been asked repeatedly to point to the Scriptural backing for this or that. When I do, all I hear is how the one asking doesn’t either agree with what is written, or has a disagreement with the translation/interpretation.

In any case, and to a previous response, the Catholic Church is the one and only authority on the proper and correct translation and interpretation of Holy Scripture.

Humans are prideful beings, but the Church, is an holy institution. Church members will come and go, as well as be of differing degrees of sinfulness, but the bride of Christ remains pure.

Please also note, discord and disagreements were settled, starting with the council of Jerusalem, with Peter at the head.

None of your lovely quotes diminishes the primacy of Peter, nor do they diminish the Petrine Ministry.

I am happy to provide a number of lovely quotes myself, however, this shouldn’t be a battle of cut and paste. However, for context, here are the relevant passages. I’m sorry to read this. Please know that the Church is comprised of human beings who are fallible, and thus experiences such as yours can and do occur. This goes for priests too. Just because they are priests doesn’t mean they don’t sin. Some much more than their parishioners! As is your case.

Actually it sounds like the entire parish you grew up in was full of some very mean people.

Please try to forgive and keep everyone involved in your prayers. If not for their sake at least for yours. Forgiveness and prayer is healing for all concerned.

Thanks. I’ve given it to God. The priest is dead now and God is dealing with him. I found out later he went on to attack others. Based on the spiritual damage from the whole incident I believe he was beyond imperfect and acting out demonic influence.

Not everyone was mean. Many understood the situation and didn’t agree the way the church handled it, but they were too scared to speak up. Plus back then no one dared go against what the priest or cardinal said.

But the ones who were mean we’re just plain miserable. I’ve already forgiven them. Like I said, it’s all in God’s hands and they’re going to have to answer to Him one day.
