LifeWay Christian Resources has stopped selling all "experiential testimonies about heaven" following consideration of a 2014 Southern Baptist Convention resolution on "the sufficiency of Scripture regarding the afterlife."

...

The resolution, adopted by messengers to the SBC annual meeting in June, warned Christians not to allow "the numerous books and movies purporting to explain or describe the afterlife experience" to "become their source and basis for an understanding of the afterlife."

Lots. First, Paul didn’t write Revelation, John did. Second, Stephen didn’t come back and tell us about having been in heaven. Third, people exclaiming that they see angels and loved ones as they pass from this world to the next is well-documented and doesn’t usually include “coming back”.

He smiled and said, ‘Mom, you recognize everyone in heaven. Grandma wasn’t around.’”

Ooops.

Nobody says you can’t read or buy it.

Just don’t count on the Southern Baptists selling it to you.

That doesn’t fly in this case. This is not the libraries and pulpits and Sunday schools of SBC churches - it’s in their retail book stores.

And btw, SBC is often legalistic and pharisaical.

Actually, they are clearly stating one shouldn’t read it or buy it. They went much further than just that.

How is then any different than now?

It was inspired by God and added to the canon of Scripture.

God reveals what He wants us to know about Heaven - sometimes He uses people to do it.

Well great, crack open the canon of Scripture and add these books!

"Legalistic and pharisaical?" Perhaps the PC(USA) is more to your liking then!

They are charged with shepherding their flock. I wish more churches would take that mission seriously. Not a Southern Baptist, heck, I'm not any kind of Baptist, but at least they are doing what they are charged to do.

Are you a member of the SBC?

Oh you stepped in it now.....no, nothing could be further from the truth. But hey, at least you’re being legalistic and pharisaical now too.

Bible believing non denominational - been there, done that on the pharisaical and the liberal denominations. Run a Christian non profit in Africa.

oh, btw - There are no denominations in the book of Acts. Sorry you require one. Just sayin....

Are they really charged with shepherding their flock? Is that really the charge for a denomination? Or is that something churches claim so they can remain in business?

And does shepherding their flock include not trusting them to see, hear, read any and everything? Or are they being legalistic? Seems to me any interest in the reality of Heaven and hell can be a good healthy interest.

And no, not a member of the SBC. Great evangelical calling, but too legalistic.

Out of curiosity, what is your opinion of the fictional (yet clearly spiritual) works of CS Lewis?

Good to see they pulled them. I’ve heard way too many using stuff like that for their understanding.

Because I don't agree with you? Got it.

Oh, wait a minute:

Matthew 6:1-34 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ...
There goes that jewel in your crown.

There are no denominations in the book of Acts.

Sure there are. Suggest your reread it slowly. You'll see one.

You’re not even smart enough to realize that you are practicing what those scriptures warn against, and defending others who are as well.

No, it’s not in there. Pure fantasy. Fairy tale, built on pride, funded by corruption.

Yes...good.

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

People need to be very skeptical about these "back from the dead" experiences. They are not biblical, and what if someone came back and said, "Jesus told me in Heaven that everyone is supposed to do what Obama says. He is my chosen vessel to bring forth righteousness!"
