At the risk of being labeled a lecher (at best) ... it seems the writer indicates the rise of Mary began in the monastaries ... where men with men were alone to deal with their own selves in whatever way for whatever reasons ... and a modern man can do equally with HIS own self ... fantasizing about a perfect woman ... and make comparisons.
I guess what I'm trying to say in a round about way is ... the exalted Mary was the woman a monastic was taught to think about ... and a man living celebately, trained to think of a perfect ... and every depiction I'VE ever seen of Mary has been angelically beautiful ... woman can only lead a celebate man to deal with thoughts that he joined the monastary to get away from.
